QSSSA
Description
What Is It?
QSSSA is a structured conversation strategy to facilitate peer conversations and develop academic language. It can be used in any content area by any grade level.
Why Use It?
QSSSA supports peer-to-peer conversations and develops academic language.
Instructional Steps:
Q- Question - Teacher asks a question related to the lesson content. Students write down their answers/thoughts to the question.
S-Signal - Teacher provides a signal for students to use when they are ready to share their answers.
S-Stem - Teacher provides a sentence stem students will use to respond.
S-Share - Students share their responses (in small groups, with a partner)
A-Assess - Teacher invites students to share their partner's response.
Quick Tips
To provide more structure depending on student needs, consider providing a word box, tiered sentence stems, directing students to write their response, and randomly choosing who speaks first.
