Create Learning Pathways in BLEND

Description

What Is It?

The features of a BLEND module can be used to structure a more personalized learning experience for students. BLEND courses and modules can be organized to be more navigable for students and their families. Advanced BLEND features (including custom course sections or MasteryPaths) can be used to differentiate the student learning experiences.

Why Use It?

To support students in being organized, completing all work on time, and creating a more personalized learning experience for students.

Instructional Steps:

As you set up your BLEND modules, consider:

  1. Setting Due Dates for assignments. This will make a reminder pop up on a student's BLEND dashboard that an assignment is due or past due.

  2. Module Structure. Adding headers that tell students which day or the week or which date aligns with tasks will help students find the correct reference page or assignment in the module more quickly. Indenting items and using emojis to signal specific types of tasks are helpful cues for students as well.

  3. Setting Requirements on your Modules. By setting requirements, students will trigger a green check mark once they complete the desired action (submit, score at least __ on a quiz, mark as done, contribute to a discussion, etc.). This helps students keep track of what they have done and what they still need to complete.

  4. Setting Prerequisites for modules. By setting prerequisites between modules, students will not be able to move on to the next module until they complete all of the prerequisites. (To set prerequisites within a module, set requirements to complete activities in a certain order.)

  5. Assigning different tasks to specific groups of students. Think of this as Group Projects where you are able to assign different tasks to different students. (Also a great way to differentiate!)

  6. Using Mastery Paths - This is a way to construct a learning experience that is automatically tailored based on a BLEND quiz grade. It could be a "choose your own adventure" survey or a skills-based auto-graded pre-assessment.

Quick Tips

  • Make sure you review each structure you set up with students so they understand how to move through their BLEND course.

  • Set up practice activities where students have to use their "To Do' list on their dashboard or Calendar to complete activities in their modules as a way to get to know how to effectively use BLEND.

  • Make sure you and your students are comfortable with using BLEND before trying to set up Mastery Paths or Student Groups.

  • Be careful about setting availablity dates in BLEND. The date and time that is set is when the task will lock and students won't be able/complete unless you reopen the assignment.
