Assistive Technology

Description

What Is It?

Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.

Why Use It?

Assistive technology helps people who have difficulty speaking, typing, writing, reading, remembering, pointing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, and many other things. Since disabilities make it harder for students to achieve at the same level as their non-disabled peers, allowing students to use assistive technology will help to support them to the same level of achievement.

Instructional Steps:

Access to some assistive technology must be determined by the ARD or 504 committee based on individual student's disabilities and needs.
