If Temporarily Without a Librarian

There are times when a campus may temporarily be without a librarian or library media specialist because that person is out on leave (e.g., maternity leave, FMLA, etc.) or because the librarian resigned or retired and a new one has not yet been hired. However, regardless of library staffing, students and staff must have ongoing access to the campus library and its resources.


The recommended action when a campus is without a librarian for an extended period of time is to hire a long-term library substitute. If this is not possible, access to library resources can be facilitated by a library clerk, TA, parent or community volunteer, teacher, or other staff member(s) designated by campus administration until the librarian returns from leave or a new permanent librarian can be hired.
