Area of Responsibility Commentary:
Given my journey at ACC - especially within Library Services - I have appreciated the support I have received from the LS Dean and SGC HL as I transitioned back to serving in LS after a lengthy assignemnt in TLED. TLED Leadership offered me a place where my lived experience is considered an asset, where my ideas and feedback are welcomed and valued, and where I feel a sense of belonging and contribution to the greater good of our ACC mission. While reintegrating into LS has been anxiety-provoking and there are still clear indications that problems exist, I feel a sense of gratitude to my HL and the LS Dean in assuring a successful reintegration into a Department that still has much work to do in order to align with the new Chancellor's approach.

In July, 2011, Barksdale was chosen by the Library Leadership Team (LLT) to lead the Information Literacy (IL) ReDesign for the District. Barksdale viewed this as an amazing honor and opportunity. When one is asked to build upon one of the finest, award-winning community college IL programs, the bar is naturally high. Fortunately, she was allowed to recruit a strong IL Team. The first year focused largely on planning, data-gathering, and researching.
In their second year as IL ReDesign Team Leader, with dedicated support from her IL Team, and invaluable support from her Dean and LLT for the redesign and for many other efforts in support of Library Services mission and goals, Barksdale:
Established connections with faculty in English, Speech, Developmental Writing, and Mathematics;
Initiated scaffolded, individual, integrated assignment design with faculty in English, Speech, Developmental Writing as an interim step to the complete pilots to be done as our new modules are developed;
Led the IL Team through a seven-month-long, unsuccessful relationship with an outside vendor;
Revised plans for the IL Team to create a new path forward and reinvigorated momentum based on collecting feedback from our stakeholders, making data-driven decisions, being transparent, being sustainable, and being strategic in supporting student success;
Researched and reviewed various scenarios and software options for moving ahead with revised IL Plan;
Rolled out a well-received District-wide IL Instruction Request Form;
Supported successful reaccreditation efforts by participating on the QEP Leadership Team, review and offering edits to the Dean for SACSCOC documents, and serving on the On-Site Welcome Team at two locations;
Joined the District-wide Distance Learning Taskforce, and compiled a literature review to support our work;
Collaborated on development of Pedagogical training for all ACC Librarians;
Supported the Dean and New Facilities Facilitator, Leigh Kilman in Highland Mall related issues and meetings.
In their first year as IL ReDesign Team Leader, Barksdale, with dedicated support from her small IL Team, and invaluable support and feedback from the Dean and LLT:
Wrote an initial IL ReDesign plan based on collecting feedback from our stakeholders, making data-driven decisions, being transparent, being sustainable, and being strategic in supporting student success;
Presented IL ReDesign plan to the Dean and past Teaching Team (TT) leadership, to LLT, and to Teams, Leaders and Facilitators (TLF) Group, for review, feedback and approval, with great success and support from colleagues;
Initiated research across the District's curriculums to identify existing IL Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs);
Created a rubric against which ACC Librarians were asked to measure our existing IL products;
Created and delivered a highly informative online faculty survey from which we are currently assessing results;
Visited Taskforce meetings, such as English and Speech, to spread the word about our IL ReDesign plans and efforts;
Met with PR Team members about ways to streamline IL Pages on the Library Services website;
Piloted an online IL request form at Cypress Creek and South Austin Campuses, which is being wrapped up currently for presentation to LLT and TLF.
iPad Pilot Team
In addition to their new IL Facilitator role, Barksdale was fortunate to receive resources from Dr. Richard L. Smith, with support from our Dean, to conduct a year-long iPad Pilot at the Cypress Creek Campus Library. Recognizing the enormity of the IL ReDesign, and the importance of the iPad Pilot, Barksdale appointed a leader and point-person, Jonathan Buckstead, to lead the Cypress Team through the iPad Pilot. Barksdale and Buckstead worked closely throughout the year to carefully track usage of the iPads, and to explore ways the iPad could enhance reference instruction, IL instruction, and Librarian productivity.
By all measures, the iPad Pilot has been a huge success. Much has been learned and shared through the pilot, which ultimately inspired the Dean to find money in the current year's budget to expand the initiative to all interested full-time Reference Librarians and reference desks across the District. The Cypress iPad Pilot Team, led by Buckstead, is affirmed that their hard work is getting these devices in the hands of librarians so that they can prepare for the coming tsunami of change this device is bringing to K-16 across the country. We are proud that our work is allowing ACC Librarians to continue to demonstrate leadership in this emerging area of importance.
In their first year, Barksdale's goals were deceptively simple:
Become familiar with ACCD's political environment;
Become familiar with their Cypress Creek Library Staff and the larger Cypress Community;
Gain an understanding of administrative processes tied to their campus leadership role;
Contribute to Library Services their talents and skills via the Library Leadership Team.
Barksdale has, during their initial year:
Gained an understanding of the political environment, both inside of Library Services and beyond;
Become well-acquainted with their Cypress Creek staff, learning their strengths and benefiting from their perspectives of the campus at large;
Mastered the basics of day-to-day management of the facility placed in their charge;
Become a valued member of the Library Leadership Team.
In addition to completing these goals, Barksdale has:
Raised awareness of Library Services through their participation in the College-wide Celebration of Great Teaching Retreat;
Represented Library Services on the Distance Learning Committee;
Facilitated improvements at the Cypress Creek Library through planning for a soon-to-be-executed rearrangement of service desks.
2011-2012 Goals
In the coming year at Cypress Creek Campus, Barksdale plans to:
Support Cypress LS Team Members during a staff transition;
Identify ways in which the Cypress Creek Library's space can be further optimized to support student learning;
Conduct a pilot using iPads to explore ways in which faculty librarians can utilize this technology to support student success at ACCD.
