Student learning goals and objectives :
Have a better comprehension on the Latin/Mexican culture / quienceañeras.
Know the importance behind quinceañeras (the who, what, when, where, why,and how).
Find similarities between yourself and the Mexican culture and quinceañeras.
1st book - Once upon a quinceañera : coming of age in the USA by Alvarez, Julia. (read chapters 1 and 2)
2nd book - Encyclopedia of Latino culture : From Calaveras to Quinceaneras by Tatum, Charles M. (read entire section of celebrations, holidays, and festivals, and read family over view. )
When you hear quinceañera what other words do you think of? How would you describe a quinceañera? What roles do age, religion, family play in this event?
When thinking of yourself what adjectives would you use to describe yourself? Where do you come from? What are your traditions? What makes you unique? What is your Identity?
What are your perceptions or thoughts of the Latin/Mexican culture? What words would you affiliate with this culture? What do you think is different, better, or worse from this culture compared to others?
Once you have read both books, chatted with your peers and identified who you are, what similarities do you have with the Latin/Mexican culture and quinceañeras? How are you different from the Mexican culture or quinceañeras?
After reading the first book (Once Upon a Quinceañera), what assumptions that you created about quinceañeras stayed the same, which assumptions were wrong, and what new information did you learn?
After chatting with your peers, what similarities do you have among each other? What things were different from you and your peers? What traditions or other things did you find interesting, weird, just want to learn more about?
After reading the second book (Encyclopedia of Latino culture : from calaveras to quinceaneras), what new conclusions can you draw about the latino culture? What inferences that you had were correct or wrong? What did you find most interesting about this particular culture?
This project will be bsed on the 4th study question!
Minimum of 500 word essay written or typed. If typed must be 12 pt font, Times New Roman, double spaced.
4 pages of black out poetry. Must have at least one page from each book. With 250 word essay following rules from above.
15 slide presentation. Your choice of presentation software
Comic strip with at least 15 different slides. Must contain words or subtitles.
