School Counseling Internship

INTERNSHIP YEAR

Approximate Start and End Dates:
August 12, 2024 - June 2, 2025

Length of Fieldwork Experience:
Academic school year or until needed hours are acquired (Graduate students needing 1 semester of placement will not be considered)

INTERNSHIP week

We are open 7:30am-4:00pm Monday through Friday which allows for flexibility in your internship week. 

Expected Hours Per Week:
Minimum of 15 hours / 2 days per week

Program Description:

TK-8 and/or Comprehensive High School placement that provides academic, social/emotional and career development to the school community. Prevention and intervention strategies provided in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 may include, but are not limited to: individual and group academic interventions, Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions (PBIS), Social Emotional Learning (classroom presentations), parent training, school staff presentations and college and career exploration. Common areas of need within our school district are truancy, homelessness, students in need of support with depression, anxiety, grief & loss, social skills, motivation, academic support (mentoring, tutoring, etc.) and classroom behavior. Most PPS Trainees will be site based for the purpose of helping to maximize the developmental potential of all students at the various ages and stages of their academic career.  

Trainee Activities:

PPS Trainees will provide 1-1 and group services to students, school staff and families in the areas of academic, social/emotional and career development. PPS trainees will utilize Tiers 1, 2 and 3 prevention and intervention strategies to help improve individual and schoolwide academic achievement, attendance, behavior and engagement. PPS Interns will work with multidisciplinary personnel at the school site for the purpose of meeting the needs of the whole child. Trainees will be required to attend a mandatory training week at the start of their fieldwork experience. This training week includes an orientation, suicide assessment, threat assessment, crisis response, child abuse mandated reporter, academic counseling, attendance, parent engagement, etc. Additional training offered throughout the school year may include but is not limited to, SEL Curriculum, Tier 2 Interventions, Creative Interventions, Group Dynamics, etc. 

Orientation

Our placement offers a week long joint internship orientation that familiarizes you with our district, our populations, and information you will need to know in order to work efficiently within our schools. Our orientation week is a requirement of our internship program and is usually conducted the third week of August.

Supervision 

Our placement offers 1 hour of individual supervision a week with your on-site PPS supervisor and 2 hours of group supervision once per month.

Graduate Students should email their CV/Resume to Ni’Kysha Johnson at johnson_nikysha@ausd.us beginning January 8, 2024. Interviews will be scheduled after review of the CV/Resume. The district will consider an unlimited number of applications to fill 10 open positions. The applicant is not obligated to accept an offer for placement, if one is extended.

Onboarding

If you are offered placement with our agency and you accept, onboarding will occur during the summer months. The program coordinator will reach out to with specific information and steps but here is an overview of what you will need to provide:

Failure to provide the required onboarding documentation may result in AUSD rescinding their offer for placement.
