What should I do if I am absent from class?
YOU are responsible for checking to see what you missed and for making up the work by doing the following 3 things (listed in order of importance):
(1) Check this website [for the missed day's Class Agenda, Class Handouts, Warm-up question(s) you might have also missed, and assigned Homework],
(2) Ask a reliable peer
(3) Email me (asuzuki@ausd.net) between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm with your questions, OR
to make an appointment with me for office hours to get in-person help!
How do I get excused from missing class?
If you missed a class, there should be an excuse from you AND a parent on why this happened, otherwise it will end up being an "unexcused absence" marked on your attendance record. If you have to be excused from classes for one period or for a day, please have your PARENTS email Mrs. Chang at anniechang@ausd.net with a reason. You and a parent can Cc each other in the email to me.
Please note that an excused absence does not excuse you from the homework assignment(s) missed. You are expected to make up the missed work and submit it to me for credit.
Am I allowed to use the restroom during class?
Please utilize the restroom during break, lunch, and/or during passing periods. You may use the restroom if given permission during class if needed, of course, but please DO NOT ask during the first and last 10 minutes of class. Remember you are missing important class instruction or information when you leave!
What does it mean to be graded on “Class Participation”?
Class Participation refers to your ability to do the following:
(1) pay attention (i.e., give eye contact to the speaker, raise your hand to make a contribution, do as you are instructed),
(2) ANSWER questions in class if I know something about it, and
(3) ASK questions when I need clarity, I don't understand something, or there's something I want to know or address.
Paying attention in class requires focus and active listening skills. It is easier to stay focused when you involve yourself by raising your hand to contribute something relevant to the class, whether it is a question or a response.
Beyond your class participation as an independent individual, it ALSO means showing interdependence among your peers and classmates. Community involvement in the classroom will help you excel the most as a student and learner. It looks like the following:
(4) help a struggling peer at your table
(5) share your thoughts and ideas with your table partner and/or table group
(6) obtain and/or return classroom materials after cleaning/tidying them
(7) bring materials and resources to class when necessary
(8) clean and tidy up your table and surrounding floors (i.e., wipe tables down, throw away/sweep up any trash that falls, push in chairs, etc.)
(9) keep the sinks clean and counters dry if you used them
(10) make sure trash bins are not overflowing (i.e., pick up and throw away any trash that fell out of the bin).
Take care of yourself, but also take care of your community members in the classroom, as well as our classroom environment.
What if I have questions during class?
I highly recommend that you ask questions during class as they pertain to what is being said or taught in that moment. Raise your hand and wait to be called on so the entire class can benefit from the question and answer. However, if you miss the chance to ask questions due to time constraints, you will need to email me or make an appointment to see me for office hours.
How can I "self-advocate for myself"?
Stay involved in the classroom by asking for help when you need it! If you are unable to ask in person or during class, reach out by email! When sending emails, please use proper email etiquette (i.e., greeting, subject line, detailed body, name and period). Take initiative and schedule an office hour appointment with me if needed, then follow through. It is a big waste of time to send an email but fail to check back or respond with confirmation. If you request my time, please show up!
How do I know what my grade in Science is?
Check PowerSchool often! If you don't check it daily, check it weekly at minimum. You and your parents can access PowerSchool to monitor your grades for all your classes.
What do I do if I have Chromebook issues?
Bring your Chromebook to Mrs. Tarsala in the school library during break or lunch and describe to her the issue you are experiencing!
When and how should Unit Review Sheets be created?
The unit review sheet should be completed as we go along the unit, so you are creating your own study guide with main concepts (Q's and A's). This can be done either in the notebook or digitally, but I think it'll be easiest if it is done in your notebook, but that is my personal preference. You can decide what is best for you, and if you decide it isn't working, you can switch to the other method.
What are CPO textbooks?
We are using CPO as supplemental science material. These may or may not be the same textbooks as last year, but we will focus on different content. This is because NGSS standards are integrated science topics, meaning life, earth, and physical sciences are combined into the curriculum for each grade level.
How often will we need to do class warm ups?
You will only need to complete warm ups when we have learned something NEW each class. This may or may not be every day.
Will there be extra credit assignments provided during the year?
I generally won't provide extra credit opportunities unless you request it AND I see that you're consistently trying really hard but might still be falling a tad short of getting to the next letter grade. However, if there is ever an extra credit idea that YOU think might be great and relevant to what we're learning about in the unit, propose the idea and I will definitely consider it! Also, even though I don't usually provide extra credit, if I find something that I think might interest students but is "EXTRA" to the curriculum, I will let you all know and provide extra credit for students who complete it with quality work.
