Using Lightbox

What is Lightbox?

Lightbox is a category of interactive eContent from Follett (they also make the program we use to manage our library collection). The content includes nonfiction titles like The Industrial Revolution or Glaciers and includes titles for ages K-12. There are supplemental materials for many core novels as well.

Click here to head to Follett's website for some great suggestions on how to navigate Lightbox. There are some good teaching resources, too!

How does it work?

Students and teachers will log in using the same guest password information. You will give this information to your students to access the content. (It is on the student side of this website as well.)

  1. Go to destinydiscover.com

  2. In the Location box, it says "Any Location." Do not change.

  3. In the School box, enter "Follett eLearning, McHenry, IL" and click Go!

  4. To log in, click on the "Log In" button at the top right of the screen.

Have your students search for the book you want them to read, and you can give direction from there. Each book is interactive! This means pages include hyperlinks, vocabulary pop-ups, and embedded videos. There is also a quiz for each book AND an activities packet.

What subjects are included?

There are over 1,000 titles in the complete K-12 Lightbox collection. All subjects are represented with the exception of Math. There are many titles on engineering etc that involve real-life math applications.

The literature titles are intended to be teacher guides rather than student material, but it is certainly an easy to to "discuss" a novel with your students by having them read about symbolism and themes in the text. There are even essay prompts built in.

Why don't we have these already?

The usually cost $40+ per title (simultaneous use) but the full collection is all FREE during school closure. If you feel these are of value to you and your students, we can certainly look into purchasing some titles for our library for future use.

What do I do if I need help?

Ask your lovely librarian! Lesley is available via email to help you select content that is subject-specific and age-appropriate and is more than happy to help.
