Vocabulary / Grammar
Vocabulary Workshop E, F, G. H (one book per grade 9-12) - Vocabulary for comprehension by exploring word structures, grammar in context exercises. Good for SAT/ACT preparation. Online components available.
Vocabu-Lit (one book per grade 9-12) - Builds vocabulary and teaches part of speech through excerpts from literature. Also builds reading comprehension skills.
180 Daily Teaching Lessons (one book per grade 9-12) - Short 10 minute lessons that provide students with a basic understanding of grammar and an expanded comprehension of more complicated concepts. This is a great resource for ACT/SAT preparation as well as helping to correct writing grammatical errors.
Grammar for the Well Trained Mind (one year only, 9th recommended) - Comprehensive teaching guide for a high schooler who does not have a strong background in grammar. It begins very basic with nouns and adjectives, then progresses to more advanced grammatical concepts that are needed for higher grade level writing and SAT/ACT verbal comprehension.
Wordly Wise (9-12) - Building vocabulary with reading comprehension using the words learned in the chapter.
Literature - American
Read With The Best 1 & 2 - Checked out as a package that includes all books need to fulfill two full years of American Literature. Each level fulfills one year. Contains a step by step guide to in-depth reading of American classics which includes analysis recommendations and writing prompts.
Literature - European
Read With The Best 1 - Checked out as a package that includes all books needed to fulfill one complete year of European Literature. Contains a step by step guide to in-depth reading of European classics which includes analysis recommendations and writing prompts.
Literature - General
Writing Strands: Understanding Fiction - Although it is designed for lower grades, this book provides a solid introduction to the steps involved in critically analyzing literature. This guide is meant for the parent to present to the student, but could be used as a student resource as well. It discusses basic analysis of setting, characters, point of view, etc. Although basic, if your student has not had much experience analyzing literature for school, this would be a good place to start the process.
English Composition
Writers Inc - a handbook that walks the student through the writing process independently. Explains how to write a five paragraph essay including argumentative, compare and contrast, and literary analysis.
Writeshop 2 - Beginning paragraph writing. Very basic, but might be a good place to begin if your student needs to start at the very beginning of critical writing.
Write With The Best Volumes 1 & 2 - Teaches writing through examples of great writers. Aged for lower grades through high school and builds and explains how to write a quality paragraph.
Writing Strands: This is meant to build a writer's skills, beginning with very simple sentence writing practice and advancing to outlining/ full essay writing. Although the lower levels begin very easy, they develop a writer's essential skills needed to write effectively at a high school level.
Writing a Research Paper - Designed for more advanced writers. When the basic five paragraph essay is accomplished, this gives your student a step by step guide to completing a research paper.
Science - General Biology
General Biology Textbook - Suggested 9th or 10th but could be used at any high school level. Teacher Edition is available. For full high school credit, supplemental experiments will need to be added to the textbook work and lab reports will need to be completed.
Science - General Chemistry
General Chemistry Textbook - Suggested 10th or 11th but could be used at any high school level. A solid background in Algebra 1 is needed to complete chemistry problems. Teacher Edition is available. For full high school credit, supplemental experiments will need to be added to the textbook work and lab reports will need to be completed.
Life of Fred Chemistry - Suggested 10th or 11th but could be used at any high school level. A solid background in Algebra 1 is needed to complete chemistry problems. Foreign Language
Spanish for Children (9-12) - Don't let the name fool you. Spanish for Children is a comprehensive three year Spanish curriculum designed to teach anyone how to write and speak Spanish. Student workbooks and DVD's help guide you through the lessons.
Sign Language - A book is available to get your student started signing. Sign Language does fulfill the high school language requirement.
