Phonemic Awareness 2A
Description: For students with deficits in their phonemic awareness skills, the following 2A will provide teacher directions and ways to progress monitor.
Directions:
After administering either Form A, B, C or Heggerty's Bridge the Gap assessment, identify area(s) of weakness to begin 2A work.
2. Follow the I do, We do, You do format to demonstrate the targeted phonemic awareness skill to learn. You may want to use words from word list examples for modeling.

Elkonin Sound Boxes
Description: Elkonin Sound Boxes are used as a visual aid to help children isolate and blend the sounds they hear in spoken words.
Directions:
Part 1 - Phoneme Isolation The first page provides Elkonin boxes with three spaces. Use this template with magnets or post-it notes to identify the location of the phoneme being isolated.
Part 2 - Blending The last page provides Elkonin boxes with two spaces. Use this template with magnets or post-it notes to provide a visual anchor for two words, two syllables, or two sounds in a spoken word. The page with three boxes can also be used to segment a word into three sounds.

Suggested progress monitoring with 5-6 rounds of words ideally every week or every 2 weeks (5/6 + or 6/6 showing mastery of isolated phonemes by pushing sounds or marking sounds with posit-it notes and 5/6 or 6/6 blending the sounds together to read words is mastery).
Common Alphabet
Description: As we all use this alphabet, the common pictures will help to provide consistency to students as they move from grade level to grade level. The Alphabet Tracing Book below has the same pictures as the Common Alphabet.
Directions: The goal for students who practice this alphabet chart is to automatically know all letter sounds (untimed). This chart will need to be read/practiced on a daily basis until all letter names/sounds are learned.

Alphabet Tracing Book
Description: The goal for students who practice this chart is to automatically know all letter sounds (untimed). This book will need to be read/practiced on a daily basis until all letter names/sounds are learned.
Directions: Using the alphabet linking chart, teacher will model for the student how to read the chart using the steps below.
After teaching modeling, direct the student to read each letter on the alphabet chart. The steps for reading each letter are:
Say the name of the uppercase letter.
Say the name of the lowercase letter.
Say the name of the picture.
End with saying the letter sound.
For example, "A, a apple /a/"
To add a writing link - ask student to write word(s) on each page that begin with the letter that is being learned.

Alphabet Arc
Description: This is a mat with printed letters of the alphabet formatted in the shape of an arc, or a segment of a circle, just like a rainbow.
Directions:
There are many ways to use each alphabet arc. The activities and mats you choose will depend on the current levels, needs, and deficits of your students. These are the three main ways of using the arcs, including step-by-step instructions to use the mats for letter matching, letter sounds, and word building.
