Theatre & LGBTQ+
The arts are used as a form of self-expression. Theatre, specifically, allows for artistic expression and creativity, open-mindedness, and emotional intelligence. Actors become something other than themselves, and in doing so learn how to be compassionate to those around them, creating an environment in which marginalized groups like the queer community can thrive.
At Augustana College
Theatre at Augustana College was and still is an outlet of creativity and joy for those involved. These performances were and still are announced and reviewed in The Observer, Augustana's newspaper. It was there that we examined how this information was presented to the student body, who was involved in theatre, as well as any mentions of sexuality or LGBTQ+ representation. For Don Faust, the theatre department was an integral part of his final years at Augustana and currently plays a larger role in his life as he has written and performed in countless shows. In the theater department, Don was able to make friends, find community, and learn and grow: as a performer and a person. Augustana was able to help Don hone his craft so he could enjoy and succeed in theatre after graduation. Meet Don Faust on the next page.
