From Fishersville VA, the Wilson Middle School Band program annually serves over 165 outstanding student musicians in grades 6-8. Filling five unique ensembles, more than 12 public performances are given in a year. One in four students at Wilson Middle School is a member of the band program. In the 24-25 school year, WMS was named a "Virginia Program of Honor" by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association.
6th grade students are enrolled in the Cadet Band program, where they cover all instruction from NO music experience, to full ensemble skills. They are separated by woodwind and brass classes.
7th grade students perform as the Concert Band. Highlights include a trip to a nearby college for a professional clinic, and participation in regular concert events such as the October "Pops Concert" and VBODA Concert Assessment. They are split into two equal concert band classes.
8th grade students perform as the Symphonic Band, and represent as the premier performing ensemble of the WMS band program. Highlights include a spring trip to King's Dominion, a performance in the Patriot Day assembly, and more.
Additionally, WMS band students may join Pep Band, Jazz Band, and audition for area Honor Ensembles.
About Mr. DeSimone
Timothy DeSimone is in his fifth year of teaching, and as the band director at Wilson Middle School. During this time program enrollment has grown from 43 to over 170 students. One in four students at WMS is enrolled in a band class, including 40% of the most recent 6th grade. He was named Wilson Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2023 , and has been twice recognized as the Augusta County Middle School teacher of the month by Lingo Networks. In the 24-25 school year, Wilson Middle School Band was recognized as a "Virginia Program of Honor" by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association. In 2024, he founded and hosted the first ever "Augusta County Summer Band Camp," serving 70 county students in a tuition free week of rehearsals and performance.
At the state level, he has served as both District V's Representative to the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association (2023-2025), and the Virginia Music Educators' Association (2024-2025).
He attended James Madison University, graduating in 2021 with a Bachelors of Music (BM) in Music Education and a minor in Jazz Studies. As a student, he served as Drum Major of the Marching Royal Dukes and was recognized by the IN8 Society for exceptional service to the Madison community.
