CHECK OUT THESE STEAM TIPS AND LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN SUPPORT YOU!! :)
STEAM TIP #1
Give your students opportunities to MAKE!!!
JOIN IN and show them YOUR creativity!
Have students share what they are making, and PRAISE their ideas and designs!
STEAM TIP #2
Call STEAM by its MANY names!
“STEM”, “STEAM”, “Making”, “Design Thinking”, “Engineering”, “Real-World Problem Solving”, etc.
STEAM TIP #3
CELEBRATE MISTAKES!
Help students celebrate and grow from mistakes! Model and share YOUR mistakes! Reflect on how mistakes help us learn, try things in a different way, and improve!
STEAM TIP #4
Create a "Mini-Makerspace" in your classroom!!
Set up a space where students can grab supplies to MAKE after they finish another task! Share rules for respecting materials and cleaning up!
(You don't need fancy robots, gears and circuits, or 3D printers! Find some cardboard, tape, recyclables, and scissors, and watch their imaginations run wild!)
Provide challenges, "dollar values" to supplies, or constraints (limited materials, limited height, preselected materials, countdown clock, etc.) to help them problem solve critically and creatively!
STEAM TIP #5
Challenge students to look at the world through their STEAM glasses and find STEAM connections everyday!
Have students make STEAM connections at home, in the content you're learning, in current events, and in their everyday lives! How does STEAM connect to their bus or car? Their computers? Their shoes? The outdoors? Their food?
Have them ask their families how they use STEAM at home or in their careers! Encourage students to share what they discover throughout the day!
STEAM TIP #6
Get Inspired by your STANDARDS!
Find those STEAM Verbs: DESIGN, CREATE, BUILD, REPRESENT, MODEL, etc. These are all great places to incorporate STEAM! :)
STEAM TIP #7
Use STEAM in Morning Meetings!
Using design thinking and challenges in morning meetings is a great way for students to collaborate, communicate, and build connections!
Have students share their big questions, curiosities, passions, interests, and encourage them to discover the STEAM and real-world connections!
STEAM TIP #8
Create a Classroom WONDERWALL!
Have students share their big questions and curiosities!
Ask the students what they WANT to learn about!
What big questions do THEY want to explore!?
Record and explore these throughout the year!
