Some parents have expressed an interest in purchasing a Chromebook for their students who do not fall into the planned distribution of devices.
Parents who wish to purchase a Chromebook on their own can do so at any time; however, if the device is to be used at any school, we do require that the device be enrolled through the county domain. This means the student will need to use their Augusta County provided Google account to access the device.
This ensures an appropriate filter will be used at all times and device settings can be maintained to ensure proper support of the device.
Current Recommendations: Dell 11 3100 Education Edition
This is the model ACPS has chosen for its durable build, manufacturer support and user reviews.
Enrolling a Chromebook through the school gives you free access to our county-wide filter. This provides a safer online experience for your student.
Cases will be provided by the division. The case is a work-in model, meaning the device never needs to leave the case! Per the Chromebook handbook, students must keep their device in the case at all times.
Chromebooks work really well when you take care of them. Best advice: Be mindful.
Quick tips: ALWAYS open the lid from the front center and NOT from the corners of the lid. DO NOT pile things like books on the tops. This could cause the screen to crack and be unusable. Keep it closed and in the case when you move around.
While Chromebooks are very useful in an educational setting, due to their nature, they will have limited use when offline. To make sure that you are able to use your Chromebook while offline, a one time setting change needs to be made on any computers you would like to use with Google Drive while not connected to the internet.
To make this change, go to your Google Drive on your Chromebook and select the gear in the upper right corner of the screen to access the settings.
If not already checked, make sure that the box in the Offline section is checked to allow Google to store files to your Chromebook for Offline use.
Be sure to select the Done button in the top right corner of the Settings screen after making your change.
From this point forward, when you’re not connected to the internet on your device, you’ll still be able to get to your Google Drive by using the app shortcut, or going to https://drive.google.com
When looking at your files, you’ll see that most are greyed out. Offline mode will typically ONLY save your most recent files to the computer for use without the internet.
While a little different, the keyboard layout makes a lot of sense for the Chromebook! These two short videos will get you started.
A Chromebook will update automatically. Sometimes however, you may need to update manually.
Go to the "About" screen found in the settings.
The screen to the right will appear. Clicking the button that says “Check for and apply updates” will allow your Chromebook to connect with Google and see if your computer has the most recent updates.
If there are any updates, your Chromebook will automatically begin downloading it. If there aren’t any, it will tell you that the Chromebook is up to date.
When it’s completely downloaded and ready to install, you’ll see a message asking you to restart your machine to complete the installation.
