How and when will the devices be distributed?
The Chromebooks will be distributed to the students as determined by the school's schedule. Contact your student's team teachers for their exact date.
Will students take their devices home with them?
Yes!
How are students and staff being trained for this 1-to-1 rollout?
Teachers are offered various training opportunities within the county. Students will be going through a "Chromebook Camp" to start their learning process.
Will there be ongoing education for parents and caregivers?
Parents are invited to attend a welcome session at each of the 1:1 schools. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and find out about our digital transformation! Additional opportunities may be provided during the year for parents.
What are some basic Chromebook functions that I should know about?
Basically, the Chromebook is a portal to the internet. Using the school-provided Google account opens access to G Suite for Education and the web. Please check Google's Chromebook page and the Chromebook Guide for info on all the bells and whistles.
Will the school provide a case and/or accessories for the device?
Yes. Cases and an AC charger will be provided to each student. Devices are required to be kept in the protective cases at all times.
How and where should devices be stored/cared for at home?
Follow the recommendations found in the 20/21 ACPS Student Chromebook Handbook.
What is my family’s responsibility for loss or breakage in school, out of school, or both?
Depending on the nature of the loss or breakage, parents or guardians can be responsible for full or partial replacement costs.
Is there an insurance plan for devices loaned to families by schools or districts?
No.
Is there an acceptable use policy (AUP)? Where can I find it?
Yes, this policy was sent home for student and parent signatures at the beginning of the school year. A signed AUP policy is required prior to receiving their 1:1 device.
What are the school’s disciplinary consequences for inappropriate use?
Disciplinary consequences are determined on a case-by-case basis by the building administrator.
Can disciplinary actions be taken if inappropriate use occurs beyond the school day or off-campus?
Yes. The AUP applies anytime the device is used.
How will schoolwork be affected if my child loses the privilege to use the device?
Teachers will work to adapt lessons as needed.
What is my family’s responsibility in monitoring what my child does on the device at home?
Parents and/or guardians are responsible for monitoring student use at home. While online content will be filtered, best practices include maintaining an active awareness in the use of the device.
Will the device need to be connected to the Internet at home to complete assignments and will this use my personal data plan?
While Chromebooks are designed and used most effectively as an online device, internet access is not required. If work is given to be completed at home, the assignment will not require online access. If students do connect to your home wifi, you will want to know your data plan and limits. ACPS will not be held responsible for home data plan charges.
Is the school using a content filter for Internet browsing?
Yes. Anytime a school-issued Chromebook is connected to the internet, even off school grounds, it is being filtered by the school.
What are the specs and configuration of the device?
We are using the Dell Chromebook 11" 3100. Specs here.
Can my child configure or personalize the device in any way?
G Suite Education accounts can be personalized with themes, apps and extensions. The physical device and case should not be marked other than the student ID info that will be taped to the device.
What are the expectations regarding use of the Chromebook at home? Is it just for school work or can my child use it for personal or entertainment reasons?
The Chromebook is designated for educational purposes and individualized learning.
Who else can use my child’s device?
The device is meant solely for the student and requires the student’s ACPS Google account for access.
What apps will be preloaded on the devices?
Various applications (apps) may be downloaded by the county as the year progresses. These apps may be found by using the Chromebook launcher and clicking on "All apps"
How will students learn to use the device and apps?
The students will attend a "Chromebook Camp" that will showcase the care and use of the device. Various apps will be taught on an as needed basis.
Can we purchase or install paid apps ourselves on the device?
At this point, students can download free apps from the Chrome WebStore. Students cannot download apps that require payment.
Can we download free apps on the device?
At this point, students are allowed to install approved, free apps from the Chrome WebStore.
Will students have email?
Yes, starting in 6th grade, email is included in the Google Suite for Education account.
How can I access or view my child’s digital work?
A student needs to log in their own Google account to view the content saved in that account.
Will we have access to the school’s online content outside of the school day?
If you have internet access, our current content will be available to you.
What kind of tech support will we have outside of school hours?
Chromebook support can only be provided during the school day.
How can I help support the school with this 1:1 program?
You can help by providing encouragement. Be an active learner with your child! Ask questions, be curious, and explore the benefits of this great technology.
