General Information about your Schedule
What Does a Typical Day or Week Look Like?
Breakfast (desayuno) is typically served at 8:00am, although that will depend upon where you are living. While in Casa Augsburg, it will typically be at 8:00am on weekdays and on your own on weekends. If and when living in a local home, you will determine your breakfast time there together with your hosts.
Spanish classes will meet every day from Monday through Friday for four hours/day with breaks, from 9:00am until 11pm. You will then have lunch (comida) at Casa Augsburg and then have other activities 2-3 times per week after lunch (often on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, &/or Friday afternoons).
Supper (cena) is typically served at 6:30pm in Casa Augsburg when living there. Again, if and when living in a local home, you will determine your supper time there together with your hosts. Please note that most Mexicans tend to eat a light supper late in the evening - often after 7 or 8 pm. However, if you get hungrier earlier or need to eat more at supper, please let your household know because they want you to be healthy and happy!
The internship and medical observership schedules will also be given to you after your arrival in Cuernavaca, as they will depend upon your specific placement site(s). Please note that if you are in the Medical Spanish and Clinical Observership program, you will probably take Spanish for Health Care Professionals intensively for 3 weeks before completing your medical observership full-time during your remaining 4 weeks.
IF you are completing an INTERNSHIP you will need to be enrolled in two blocks in order to complete the required hours (total 6.5 weeks). You will start your internship early in your first block and have a different Spanish schedule than the other students. It will depend entirely on your internship placement. In addition, internship students will participate in a weekly internship class seminar.
If you are completing an internship or medical observership, you may have to work during the evenings.
In general, your days will be quite full due to the intensive nature of summer courses, combined with the cross-cultural learning components that involve guest lectures and/or excursions. Since guest speakers and excursions often require translation, they are often longer than typical class sessions in the U.S. Your typical day in Cuernavaca will be very busy. Moreover, there are occasionally last-minute cancellations or time changes. Hence, we ask for your patience and flexibility.
Please note that there will be at least one mandatory guest speaker or excursion and one “Cultural Issues” session every week.
Weekly Calendars
You will be given access to the CGEE-Mexico Summer Gmail calendar so that you can sync your class and activity schedule with your own Gmail calendar if you have one. Since afternoon and weekend activities vary each week, we will update the Gmail calendar by the latest every Friday, at which time we will send you a WhatsApp message with a copy of the detailed schedule for the following week. If you have questions about the schedule, please check the Gmail calendar and also ask Ari.
Am I Free on the Weekends? Fun, optional excursions!
We will sponsor optional, free day-trips to historical, cultural, and recreational locations on either Saturday or Sunday almost every weekend. You are also encouraged to spend time with Mexican friends, especially if you are living in a local home. Sometimes they will invite you to go places, and you can also invite them to participate in the free day-trips that are sponsored by Augsburg.
IF you are completing a medical observership or internship, you may have to work on a weekend day. It is particularly common for medical observerships to involve at least one weekend day. Again, you will find out about your placement and schedule after you are in Mexico.
There could be an optional day excursion to participate in National Gay Pride in Mexico City on Sat. June 29 (during Block 2) if enough people are interested.
