In an effort to support elementary school teachers hoping to integrate Computer Science into their classrooms, the Department of Technology will host three in-person professional development sessions and an online learning course throughout the 2018-19 school year.
Certificated staff will be paid their hourly rate for the duration of in-person training and will receive STEM clock hours for their attendance when completing three or more hours of training.
Participants will be able to identify CS integration points, teach with an awareness of CS Standards, understand the importance of unplugged lessons, apply computational thinking strategies and successfully-failing strategies in your classroom. You will be exposed to experiences of successful unplugged activities and offer connections between Computer Science and NGSS state standards.
TBD
After building your understanding of CS standards and strategies in CS 101, this course will enable teachers to learn the computational thinking strategies and integration tactics surrounding the Code & Go Mice and Dash & Dot robots. Each school is equipped with seven Code & Go Mice and seven Dash robots that pair with Kindle Fires to share among their classrooms.
TBD
In attending this training, teachers will develop hardware protocols and integration tactics using micro:bit resources and advanced programming concepts. Each school is equipped with a class set (30) of micro:bit computers to share among their classrooms.
TBD
Meet with several Computer Science leaders within Auburn SD to highlight research and tools to guide increasing equitable instructional practices around Computer Science, specifically to increase success with traditionally underrepresented students. Teachers in attendance can collaborate in their learning about Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices in the hopes of framing a supportive classroom climate for all students to learn Computer Science practices.
TBD
*Online Learning version of ASDCS 101: CS Standards, Strategies & Resources
Participants access the Washington State Computer Science Standards adopted in 2016 to create integration opportunities within their classrooms. Teachers will learn how to use unplugged activities and make connections between Computer Science and Common Core/NGSS state standards.
