Our Program
The Athenian School is a founding member of Round Square and has been a member since 1966. Round Square is an international consortium of like-minded schools that collaborate to develop global competence in their students. The Round Square pillars and IDEALS--internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership, and service--are integrated into many aspects of school life. Athenian has a strong sense of community and the social environment is casual and informal. There is no school uniform. Students and faculty are on a first name basis with each other and often develop close connections. The student body exhibits a rich variety of ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The Athenian School was founded in 1965 by Dyke Brown, who envisioned a school with the goal of Periclean Athens – the full development of each citizen. Athenian is a coeducational school located 53 kilometers (33 miles) east of San Francisco, California. The spacious 75-acre campus is adjacent to a large regional park. Athenian has 360 students in the upper school (60 of whom board) and 150 students in the middle school. Athenian has a large Exchange Program and has ongoing exchange partnerships with Round Square schools around the world.
