Dr Ambeth Ocampo explained that understanding history is a process and a journey of discerning the full objective truth. History is shaped by the diverse perspectives and motivations of the people who live in it. However, the fallibility of human memory can cloud these individual narratives, highlighting the need to constantly validate and critically examine historical accounts. He then emphasized the need for education and reading to constantly combat misinformation. Lastly, he stressed the importance of remaining curious and instilling critical thinking as a way of living. - Ateneo.edu
The 2024 Ateneo Development Field School (ADFS) journeyed to Siargao for community-based participatory development. For this year’s ADFS, students went to one of the country’s top tourist destinations, not as tourists, but as engaged researchers and development workers. Partnering with Gawad Kalinga (GK) Pangarap Village in Lobogon, Del Carmen, students transformed theory into practice during their two-week community immersion. Guided by Field Directors from the Development Studies Program—Dr Mark Anthony D Abenir, Nota F Magno, and Maria Victoria F Punay—students collaborated in Participatory Action Research across three community sectors: KapitBahayan (community leaders), Youth, and Children. This approach not only deepened the students’ understanding of the community’s context but also empowered them to co-create solutions with the locals.

This immersive field-based course allowed the students to conceptualize and implement a closely supervised inquiry on sociocultural issues of communities living near mangroves at Siruma, Camarines Sur. Students engaged with the Penitan Agricultural Cooperative and learned how to apply a range of theories and methodologies drawn from the disciplines of Sociology and Anthropology while working on their respective socio-cultural investigations.
Images were screen-captured from videos provided by Glenda Wui, PhD of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.
Students were introduced to the history, culture, political economy, and culinary heritage of the three largest cities of Sabah; visited indigenous and community-conserved areas, Sandakan Rainforest Discovery Centre, and the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary; and interacted with local communities to learn about ecotourism, protected areas management, green economy, as well as blue economy.

As the world transformed during the pandemic, the media landscape in the Philippines and the region also transformed with the accessibility and popularity of queer media such as Boys Love, also known as BL.
Originating from Japan, BL has now become a global phenomenon in recent years as these become increasingly localised and distributed to different audiences and their languages. From streamed web dramas to webtoons, BL has become a media genre that is challenging conservative and heteronormative representations of gender and sexuality in the region. In this roundtable, we'll hear from our guests, Akiko Mizoguchi and Thomas Baudinette, who will share their insights on how BL is transforming media landscapes, gender expression, queer culture and politics within Japan and the world.
