The Ateneo de Manila University, through the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, provides a venue for visiting students from the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology to experience Metro Manila and its environs.
The Ateneo Cultural Encounters introduces students to the dynamic nature of history, sociopolitics, performing arts, markets, food cultures, and religion, among others, in everyday life, while using the concepts and ideas acquired in the program's various activities as a way of enhancing their conversational English. Initiated in 2019 but interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the program resumed in Intersession 2023.
After a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Development Studies Program offered its Ateneo Development Field School (ADSF) during the Intersession 2023. The ADSF is a six-unit, four-week course designed to hone students' skills in applied research, deepen their understanding of a development issue, and allow them to contribute to social development.
Led by Dr. Mark Abenir, Associate Professor at the Development Studies Program, the ADSF was held from June 19 to July 14, 2023 with the Gawad Kalinga (GK) St Joseph community in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, and GK Ateneo. Their project, a participatory action research on youth and kapitbahayan governance, aimed to fortify community relations and youth involvement in GK St Joseph.
The Ateneo Initiative for Southeast Asian Studies, with funding from the Ateneo Ricardo Leong Institute for Global and Area Studies, offered the SEAS in-country field study in Surabaya, Indonesia in June-July 2023. Ten students from the undergraduate programs in Diplomacy and International Relations, European Studies, History, Interdisciplinary Studies Program, Management, and Applied Mathematics and Finance participated in the program which promotes internationalization and a greater understanding of the Southeast Asian region. This year's field study, led by Ms. Nota Magno of the Development Studies Program and Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was co-hosted by Ateneo de Manila partner universities in Indonesia: the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur (UPN Veteran) and Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya.
Program participants also attended the 7th International Relations on Indonesian Foreign Policy Conference (IROFONIC) organized by UPN Veteran on June 19, 2023. Together with expert speaker, Dr. Czarina A. Saloma-Akpedonu (Dean of the School of Social Sciences) who shared her research on greening the city, the students presented three conference papers on Sustainable Development.
SEAS 101 2023 followed the first field study that was held in Brunei Darussalam in 2017.
New Consumer Cultures in the Global South brings together a team of researchers from different parts of the world to study the cultural consequences of economic change among people who have traditionally been categorized as ‘urban poor’ in four cities: Guangzhou, China; Metro Manila, Philippines, Mexico City, Mexico; and São Paulo, Brazil. Funded by the Australian Research Council, the project makes use of interviews, photographs, and archival research to understand how consumer cultures have changed across these different countries of Asia and the Americas.

The Ateneo Center for Asian Studies (ACAS) embarked on a learning and networking visit to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. ACAS linked up with partners from Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Malaysia Sabah for joint activities to advance the School of Social Sciences' goal of broadened translocal and transnational engagements, especially in Mindanao and surrounding regions.
Run by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Loyola School of Social Sciences, this annual field school seeks to do the following: 1) introduce students, whether undergraduate or graduate, whether domestic or international to the value of cultural heritage by documenting a specific aspect of a community’s cultural heritage, 2) teach qualitative methods of research relevant to the study of heritage, and 3) partner with particular communities in incorporating cultural heritage in their development agenda. Students recently worked with communities on projects such as studying the weaving ways of cotton textile-makers in Vigan and documenting foodways in two Cebu municipalities. Students earn six credits at the end of the Intersession. The field school was originally called the Ateneo Cultural Laboratory, then the Ateneo Social and Cultural Laboratory, and now the Cultural Heritage Studies Field School. This year's field school was held in Tuguegarao with students studying the role of fishing in the everyday world of Cagayan Valley.

The Ateneo Korean Studies Program successfully hosted the 3rd Conference on Korean Studies in Maritime Southeast Asia last May 31, 2023, with the theme ‘Locating Korea in Post-COVID Urbanscapes in Southeast Asia: Emerging (Dis)Connections and Cultural Exchanges.’
Following the success of the first two conferences on ‘Emerging Convergences Across the Seas,’ and ‘Korean Studies Research and Pedagogy,’ the third conference brought together studies that re-visit Korea’s presence in the region’s diverse urbanscapes. In particular, it shed light on emerging (dis)connections and new patterns of intercultural exchanges between Korea and Southeast Asia shaped within and by post-COVID cities and localities in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. With the aim of creating research synergy within the region, the conference also included an information session on current Korea-based research on Southeast Asia and an awarding ceremony for the recipients of the Korean Studies Graduate Research and Publication Awards, supported by the Academy of Korean Studies.
The Ateneo Korean Studies Program is at the forefront of expanding Korean Studies in Maritime Southeast Asia – a region with rising economic potential where Korean communities, industries, and investments continue to grow, but whose contribution to the globalization of Korean Studies lacks significant recognition. Through its conferences, it hopes to promote Korean Studies scholarship from diverse Southeast Asian perspectives and encourage critical dialogue on relevant issues important to both Korea and the region.
On July 3, 2023, Dr. Manuel Enverga III and Mr. Javier Rico Israel Tionloc of the European Studies Program gave a seminar-workshop to public and private high school teachers entitled "Using European History to Teach Global Citizenship" as part of the Ateneo Teacher Center's 2023 Turo Guro. The morning session connected European history to global issues, while the second focused on tools and learning strategies to deepen students' appreciation for the concepts, values and experiences of global citizenship.
The Economics Department had its first Turo Guro seminar-workshop for public and private high school teachers entitled "Econ-tuhan Live: Understanding Economic Cycles and Adapting to the Effects of Disruptions" last July 22, 2023.
In the opening lecture, Dr. Alvin Ang discussed the Philippine economy in context of economic and business cycles. This was followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Atty. Jan Fredrick Cruz, on the sources and effects of disruptions where Dr. Noel de Guzman gave a historical review of major economic and financial disruptions, Mr. Joselito Sescon talked about disruptions from technological sources, including his take on artificial intelligence, while guest DepEd Asst. Sec. Dexter Galban described the state of basic education amidst and after the Covid-19 shock.
The afternoon session focused on coping and adapting behavior. Mr. Genesis Lontoc gave a practical talk on personal finance as families prepare for risks and build their resiliency. Ms. Angel America facilitated an interactive workshop with the high school teachers, putting them in small groups, as they answer guide questions related to the effects of disruptions on economic and academic life, as well as the disposition, values, and skills necessary in adapting.
The other moderators and organizers included Economics teacher Mr. Charlon Mayo, Economics Outreach Committee head Dr. Cristina Bautista, graduate student assistant, Ms. Aya Gulapa, with the support of the Ateneo Teacher Center Director Ms. Rita Atienza and her staff.
The Ateneo Korean Studies Program's former director, Mr. Oliver John Quintana and faculty member Ms. KC Rico, are part of the team who worked on the Filipino translation of "Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS", the first ever official book published in celebration of the 10th anniversary of BTS.
