ADVISORY: While a general community quarrantine is in effect due to the COVID19 pandemic, the Ateneo de Manila University has scaled down its operations, the NCIC facility included. Operating schedule and hours will be limited. Direct personal engagements of NCIC staff to clients will be kept to a minimum while we strive to serve our clients on a mostly remote set-up. National Chemistry Instrumentation Center (NCIC)

The National Chemistry Instrumentation Center (NCIC) is a research service center (under the Department of Chemistry, School of Science and Engineering, Ateneo de Manila University) established in 1995 to provide support services in the areas of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometry and Mass Spectrometry (MS) to researchers, industry and government regulators in the Philippines. The initial impetus for the NCIC was the Engineering and Science Education Program (ESEP) financed through the World Bank and administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The NCIC undertakes research projects and provides analytical services which require the use of the NMR, GC-MS and HPTLC. The list of projects that the center has undertaken include:

  • Quality parameters and processing of Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Development of analytical methods for 3-Monochloropropane diol (MCPD) in soy sauce

  • Analysis of natural products

  • Analysis of carrageenan

  • Culturing and analysis of blue green algae (Spirulina)

  • Profiling of urine metabolites

Some of the analytical services we are capable of include the following:

  • NMR Analysis

    • 1D and 2D NMR liquid state experiments

              1. 1H PROTON, water suppression, deuterium exchange

              2. 13C - CPD, DEPT;

              3. Homonuclear - COSY;

              4. Heteronuclear direct (HETCOR, COLOC) and inverse (HMBC, HMQC)

              5. Pulsed Field Gradient

    • Quantitative analysis of co-polymers (13C)

    • Qualitative analysis of xanthates and heparin (1H PROTON)

    • Profiling of various extracts (1H, 13C and 31P)

    • Solid State NMR experiments

  • GCMS Analysis

    • Profiling of volatile oil extracts and headspace analysis

    • FAME (fatty acid methyl ester analysis)

    • Identification of unknown compounds

    • Quantitative analysis of known compound

    • Natural Products Extraction and Profiling

        • Solvent Extraction

        • Steam Distillation

        • Qualitative Profiling using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)

        • Quantitative Analysis and Profiling ucing High Performance TLC

Aside from these services, the NCIC also accepts purchases of certain laborarory consumables such as liquid nitrogen at PHP 400 per liter.
