SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION
Fr. Francisco M. Perez, S.J. was a Jesuit priest who lived a life of adventure. After training to become a medical student and a pilot in his youth, he eventually joined the Society of Jesus, became a priest, and taught English and Mathematics in various public high schools in Cebu. He eventually moved to Manila, gained a master’s degree in Biology and chaired the Loyola Schools’ Biology department in the 1970s. His exceptional teaching ability and versatility led him to teach all the major sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and even Computer – in the Ateneo de Manila High School. In his computer classes, students were taught how information can be communicated digitally through graphic and web design. By his retirement from teaching, he had served Ateneo for 44 years, a testament to his enduring quality as a science educator. True to his biology roots, he saw out his final years caring for his butterfly farm and garden in the Jesuit Residence, a farm which still exists today.
