Unit 1 Visual Literacy: Unit on Visual Cue and Analysis of the image. We had to take three different images we found out in the Wild and explain how they made a message come across to the viewer. It was an interesting project because it made me really look at the different things that I see on a daily basis and analyze them to try to understand what the developer of the image was trying to convey to the viewer. What I ordinarily took for granted, is in reality a much more complex process.
Unit 2 Visual and Learning: Effective Learning through Visuals: We had to take an image and effectively understand, use, and create visual images and cues. The image I choose might be a bit overwhelming to have this much information in a single place, the purpose isn’t really to tell a story but to improve understanding of a complex topic. Personally, I have a story that I use when I’m explaining this type of concept. I was doing a wireless analysis of a Retirement home here in Phoenix (Human Good) and the facility had allowed each resident to implement their own personal WiFi. My goal was to make the facilities' WiFi work. However when the different Access Points (AP) went searching for an available channel to broadcast. So it was a combination of pictures and CUEs to get a point across.
Unit 3 Visual Design Models and UDL Related to Visual Information. Covered UDL Model and the ACE Model. I used Google Draw.: a web-based tool that allows users to create and edit diagrams, charts, and other visual elements to create a visual Image. I found out I’m terrible at using this tool. However, I need to learn new tools and would like to learn something easily available on most platforms. So I picked a tool I could use on my Linux box or on an Android platform. This was an interesting project and helped me understand how to break up the different parts of visual representation and really think about how the visual is being used and evaluated by different learners.
Unit 4 Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity The CRAP Model. Analyze an artifact using CARP. This was an interesting project and helped me understand how to break up the different parts of an artifact. I choose a basic website that covered the differences between 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz. I wanted to pick a subject that I was familiar with so I could concentrate on the analysis of the site and not on the subject of the site. I feel it helped me pick apart the artifact presentation succinctly.
Unit 5 Color, Image, and TYPE We had to take a presentation from our past and rework it. We really focused on Color, the images, and the typeface used in the presentation. I found lots of ways to make the presentation better. This is a talk I gave in 2009 to a group of people. It had a mixed group of sales, marketing, and engineers. I put half of them to sleep and I like to think the other half were on the edge of their chair, but probably not. Regardless, I think it's better after a rework. The last three slides encompass my changes.
Unit 6 Organization / Integration Web Design / Portfolio: This website was the final section of the course. I put it together using google sites, Google Docs, Blogger, Google Pictures, and Google Slides. It was really a culmination of our work from all the different pieces we worked on throughout the course. We were basically tasked to: Can you take what we have learned and apply it to a visual representation of our work? I think it's a work in progress and I do think I'm getting better at it, but still have a lot to learn. I am more mindful of dealing with images. The Link takes you back to my home page.
