A Writing System for Tamayame (Review Peterson 2024 and Moving Forward)

Objective: Revisit past work on orthography development and finalize a practical writing system that balances linguistic accuracy, community preference, and usability.

Key Activities:

Community consultation on sound-symbol correspondences.
Testing orthographic consistency across dialects and speech registers.
Piloting reading and writing activities.

Tangible goals:

An orthography guide.
Literacy primers or storybooks using the system.

Linguistics: Morphology and Syntax

Objective: Analyze the structure of Tamayame words (morphology) and sentences (syntax) to support documentation, pedagogy, and resource creation.

Key Activities:

Collect and gloss natural language data.
Identify morpheme types: roots, affixes, clitics, etc.
Document constituent order, grammatical relations, and clause types.

Tangible goals:

Morphosyntactic sketch.
Annotated texts illustrating grammatical features.

Methods in Language Documentation

Objective: Build capacity in community-based documentation practices, emphasizing ethical, sustainable, and culturally appropriate methods.

Key Activities:

Training on field recording techniques, metadata, informed consent.
Workshops on data management and archiving.
Discussing goals: preservation, revitalization, intergenerational transmission.

Tangible goals:

Protocols for field documentation.
Sample annotated and archived recordings.

Grammar Book and Dictionary Development

Objective: Develop accessible and scholarly linguistic resources that support language learning and intergenerational transmission.

Key Activities:

Organize data into thematic grammar chapters (phonology, morphology, syntax, etc.).
Compile lexical entries with definitions, example sentences, and cultural notes.
Use tools like FLEx for lexicon building.

Tangible goals:

Draft of a pedagogical and/or reference grammar.
Bilingual dictionary prototype (print and/or digital).

Methods in Audio and Video Documentation

Objective: Train participants to produce high-quality, ethical multimedia documentation for archival and educational use.

Key Activities:

Hands-on sessions with recording gear (recorders, mics, video cameras).
Instruction on file formats, storage, and editing basics.
Capture natural speech events, stories, ceremonies (with permission).

Tangible goals:

A small corpus of recorded and catalogued materials.
Short edited videos for language learning.

Curriculum Building
