What is DaVinci Resolve?
DaVinci Resolve 18’ is a computer software for video editing, and we will be using it to develop course videos to increase our faculty presence on the online courses. The software allows video editing, audio editing, and lighting settings to be altered. DaVinci Resolve meets professional editing standards and can be used for free, allowing a quality product to be accessed by a wide audience. For this project, DaVinci Resolve will be used for editing and uploading videos that meet the standards of the university. Here are some basics that will help with creating a video that meets the specifications set by the university's branding team.
The 'Media Pool' is where the content that must be edited together must be imported from the computer. The content for this project includes the university's pre-recorded video bumper, a 5-6 second title featuring the course prefix and a very concise description of the video, and a 5-8 minute video of the faculty member speaking.
The 'Cut' area is where edits can be made to the content that has been imported to the 'Media Pool'. If the title featuring the course prefix and a very concise description of the video is over 5-6 seconds, this is the area where that video may be trimmed to fit the time constraints. If there are mistakes in the video of the faculty member speaking, this is the area where the video may be cut to remove parts of the video that are unwanted or unnecessary. The 'Cut' area provides an opportunity to polish the imported content before putting the video all together in the 'Edit' area.
The editing space allows for clips that have been trimmed or cut to be put into order with transitions and effects. The transitions expected in this project are a crossfade between each section of the video and, a transition that fades to black at the end of the video. There are a variety of transition options to choose from but for this project, simple fades will suffice.
Delivering the complete video from DaVinci Resolve is a breeze with the quick rendering option provided by the software. The Video that has been trimmed and edited may be uploaded to YouTube straight from the software, with rendering and uploading done to fit the platform selected.
DaVinci Resolve allows for audio and lighting visuals to be adjusted with other areas of the software. For the project at hand, the most important features are importing media, cutting and trimming, editing, and rendering for upload to other platforms.
