This digital portfolio documents my experiences through the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP), an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare engineers to address the world’s most pressing challenges through research/creativity, multidisciplinary and multicultural learning, entrepreneurship, and service learning. Through this program, scholars connect their academic coursework and experiential learning to one of the NAE Grand Challenges: Joy of Living, Sustainability, Security, and Health.
Becoming a Grand Challenge Scholar
Through the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP), I advanced the "Joy of Living” theme by intentionally developing competency across research, multidisciplinary and multicultural learning, entrepreneurship, global dimension, and service learning. My senior Capstone project with L3Harris demonstrated research and creativity through Lean Six Sigma analysis, facility redesign, and process optimization to reduce waste in the production of night-vision technologies that enhance U.S. military safety and situational awareness. Coursework such as FSE 150 expanded my multidisciplinary perspective by integrating engineering innovation with societal impact, while FSE 301 strengthened my entrepreneurial competencies by developing a financially viable consulting model grounded in market analysis, stakeholder benchmarking, and scalable strategy. My studies in cross-sector collaboration and global communication further reinforced the importance of aligning public, private, nonprofit, and military efforts, while cultivating the multicultural awareness necessary for cross-cultural leadership. These are just a few of the experiences demonstrating measurable achievement of the GCSP goals across all five competencies.
Collectively, these experiences illustrate strong connectivity across the GCSP framework and clear preparation for my future career in defense and cross-sector leadership. The integration of defense innovation, cultural awareness, organizational strategy, and community impact reflects a holistic interpretation of the “Joy of Living” theme. Overall, the GCSP experience strengthened my capacity to apply engineering management principles to complex societal systems and expand structured industry partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities.
