ASU’s Interplanetary Initiative lab was facing challenges completing the stress testing requirements to have their CubeSat’s 18650 batteries approved for space flight through Nanoracks. To address these challenges, our team has created an efficient and reliable 18650 battery tester design for stress testing. The battery tester simulates real life charging and discharging at 0.5C and displays/reports to the Arduino IoT Cloud.

Analog implementation of neural networks is a promising research area for faster, more efficient machine learning algorithms. Dr. Marinella and Sandia National Laboratory developed a memristor array that could be used for these applications, but it was not accessible to researchers and developers. The team developed an interface to allow researchers to easily control, measure, and program the chip.

Hades Radio is a Software Defined Radio Telescope that is designed to capture the Hydrogen Line at 1420MHz. We built a custom motorized mount for the Z-axis with a stepper motor and Arduino code. We also built 3 separate models to test effectiveness versus cost to create the most affordable end product.

This project is centered on developing a hybrid reluctance-permanent magnet outrunner motor and its controller. This motor design aims to address the limitations of existing small-scale. Electric motors, particularly outrunners, which face challenges related to size, weight, limited speed, and temperature sensitivity. The need for complex drivetrains and gearboxes to mitigate these limitations adds complexity and cost to current electric motor technology, where the team's primary objective is to deliver a motor that provides higher torque density and efficiency, is cost-effective, and sustainable compared to conventional electric motors and overcome these shortcomings.

Team Thermostat has designed and built a smart thermostat with the capability to control two heating sources. This capability is implemented to support the adoption of environmentally friendly heat pump technology. Utilizing data collected from the internet and measured from the environment, the thermostat can use whichever of the heat sources will minimize cost or emissions at any given time.

A flexible sleeve for a pickleball paddle that measures grip force and swings paths. It is a training tool for new players of pickleball who are learning different shots in the game. Different shots such as a dink shot and a drive require different grip forces and swing motions to be executed properly which is what this project aids in.

The rise of distributed energy sources (DERs) such as turbines and solar panels have created the need for bidirectional flow in the bulk electric system. To determine if this is safe for existing infrastructure, a hosting capacity analysis (HCA) is performed. Reducing the amount of time the data validation step takes will reduce the amount of time an HCA takes - allowing stakeholders to safely integrate DERs into the grid.
