Don't speak any Portuguese or Spanish? Start with POR 101! This course introduces you to the language and day-to-day culture of the Portuguese-speaking world with a focus on Brazil. In our interactive classes you will learn how to introduce yourself, ask and answer basic questions, talk about your preferences, your academic and professional routines, your likes and dislikes, and much more!

This course has POR 101 or equivalent as a pre-requisite. You will continue to advance your skills in the language, learning how to ask and answer simple questions in Portuguese, how to describe people and places, how to talk about your family, how to shop for clothes, groceries, and how to read ads for renting a house or an apartment, and much more! If you already speak some Portuguese, contact us about taking a placement exam!
Offered every spring semester.
This is a third semester course that has POR 102 or equivalent as a pre-requisite. In our interactive classes you will learn how to describe things you did in the past, expand your vocabulary on food, clothing, and travel, and learn how to read and write basic texts such as ads, announcements, and short narratives about the past. If you already know some Portuguese, contact us about a placement test!
Offered every fall semester.
This is the last course in the lower-division sequence. It fulfills the language requirement. POR 201 is the pre-requisite for it, although you can also take a placement test if you already know some Portuguese. In this course you will learn skills such as booking flights and hotels, navigating airports, understanding travel packages and much more! You will also learn more advanced vocabulary to talk about technology and the environment and you will explore more complex ways of talking about the future.
