We are working to develop better team research across the cancer prevention and control spectrum, with particular emphasis on engaging community partners. We focus on the design and implementation of new interventions and research as we know more research is needed to further reduce cancer mortality, particularly in underserved and at-risk populations.
This team brings together scientists and community partners with expertise in basic bioscience, development and testing of interventions, testing in real world environments, and implementation in practice and policy. Community partners are a vital part of the team, as are students.
Over 600,000 people die from cancer each year in the US and cancer is the second leading cause of death in Arizona. Cancer mortality has been declining in both Arizona and the US, but the primary reasons for this decline are increased cancer prevention and control (CPC), including early detection prevention, screening, healthcare delivery, quality of life, and/or survivorship related to cancer. While improved early detection via screening, reductions in smoking, and improvements in the quality of cancer care have been major reasons for this decrease, much more is needed in this area.
