Biography: I am an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. My research interests lie at the intersection of human-robot interaction, machine learning, and control theory: I develop learning and control algorithms to personalize robots that collaborate with people. I direct the Collaborative Robotics Lab (Collab). My team received the NSF CAREER Award in 2024. Before joining Virginia Tech, I was a postdoctoral scholar in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. I received my doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University in 2018, and my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 2014. In 2017, I was also a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

Presentation Title: From Co-Play to Co-Driving: Partner-Coupled Planning in Time-Critical Human-Autonomy Teams
Biography: Jonathan DeCastro is a Staff Research Scientist and Research Lead at Toyota Research Institute, where he leads research on time-critical human-AI teaming for assistive driving and human-robot collaboration. His interests include bridging learning and human-aware control, combining optimization, hybrid systems, and formal methods with modern ML. His recent work has appeared at AAMAS, L4DC, ICRA, RSS, CoRL, and IJRR, with several invited special-issue and workshop contributions. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Presentation Title: Towards Closed-Loop Collaboration: Integrating Intention Tracking, Self-Correction, and Long-Term Adaptation in Collaborative Robotics
Biography: Katie Driggs-Campbell is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an affiliate with the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, and is currently the Associate Director of Robotics for the Illinois Center for Autonomy. She received a B.S.E. with honors from Arizona State University in 2012, and M.S. and PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from UC Berkeley in 2015 and 2017, respectively. After that, she was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory. Katie now runs the Human-Centered Autonomy Lab, which designs intelligent systems that can safely interact with people out in the real-world. Her work draws from the fields of AI, control, safety, and human factors. She works in a variety of application domains, including assistive robotics, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. Katie has received multiple best paper awards and is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society’s Early Academic Career Award, and UIUC’s Campus Distinguished Promotion Award.

Presentation Title: "A Future 'We' Beyond 'Me:' User Representation in the Design of Domestic Service Robots"
Biography: Dr. Samantha Shorey (Ph.D., University of Washington) is a design researcher who studies automated technologies — such as AI and robots — in the workplace. In her research, she seeks to highlight the labor and innovation of people who are often overlooked in media narratives about new technologies. Shorey is currently a fellow at the Roosevelt Institute where she is advancing policies to support the workforces that make, implement and maintain AI technologies. In 2026, she will be a panel member of the AI100: Stanford’s 100 year study of AI. She uses qualitative methods of ethnography and critical making to learn about various technology design processes, ranging from maintaining industrial AI-powered machines to prototyping with 3D printing. Dr. Shorey's teaching is dedicated to helping students understand how workplace cultures impact the development and diffusion of new technology.

Presentation Title: Race Against the Robots: Automation and Inequality in Postwar America
Biography: Salem Elzway is an Assistant Professor of History at Florida State University whose research engages the past, present, and future of automation through the intersections of labor history, political economy, and Science, Technology, and Society (STS). His in-progress manuscript provides the first scholarly history of the industrial robot and explores the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and American industrial policy during and after the Cold War. Elzway earned a PhD in History from the University of Michigan in 2023 and served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at the University of Southern California and in the Collaborative Humanities Postdoctoral Program at Vanderbilt University.
