More solutions or more problems?
The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most well-known ecosystems on Earth. It's rich biodiversity and massive size are incomparable. However, by only focusing on the rivers and forests, we ignore the voices of people who actually live there. In fact, most Brazilians in the Amazon live in rapidly-growing large cities. This means that addressing urban climate change is vital to the protection of the rest of the Amazon Rainforest and our global efforts to mitigate climate change.
The largest threat and opportunity for this issue will be in 2025 when Belém, the largest Brazilian city in the Amazon River Delta, will host COP 30. This conference is the United Nations' flagship annual climate conference that aims to bring world leaders and activists together to craft climate solutions. While this is an important symbolic signal, the environment does not live only on nice gestures.
Will Belém be a turning point or a flashpoint for global participation for climate change?
