What happens when something as familiar as chocolate becomes a territory for
design exploration?

The Design School at Arizona State University and Mondelēz International bring a new generation of designers to London.

The Curious Matter of Chocolate is an interdisciplinary exhibition presented by The Design School at Arizona State University in collaboration with Cadbury / Mondelēz International during London Design Festival 2026. Industrial design and graphic design students explore the relationships between chocolate, people, products, packaging, communication and experience.

Designed by a generation,
for a generation

Our students' point of view is at the heart of The Curious Matter of Chocolate.

As emerging Gen Z designers, they bring their own behaviors, cultural backgrounds and expectations to the creative process. ASU's diverse student population offers perspectives from within the generation the project seeks to understand, not simply interpretations from the outside.

The result is not a single answer to the future of chocolate, but a collection of propositions that demonstrate how design can question, reimagine and transform familiar experiences.

About the Collaboration

Developed through an academic collaboration between The Design School at Arizona State University and Mondelēz International, the project connects emerging designers with industry while maintaining an academic environment centered on research, experimentation, interdisciplinary thinking, and creative exploration.

The exhibition represents the international phase of an academic–industry collaboration developed through Design Ventures & Innovation (DVI) at The Design School (TDS).

ASU's participation in the London Design Festival also coincides with the Launch of ASU London, reinforcing the university's commitment to global engagement and new forms of collaboration across design, education, industry, and innovation.
