ASU lecturer Shawn Klein argues performance enhancers should not be banned, while ASU undergraduate Walt Anderson argues they should be allowed to a degree. As with most practical ethical disputes, there is no shortage of nuance between the two positions taken by our guest debaters. What counts as a performance enhancing drug, and what reasoning do we have to preclude athletes—whose livelihood and career depend upon peak performance— from using these drugs? As the debate unfolds, we find that these two share some important common ground. The debates unravels into an engaging discussion around laws, health, and integrity of sport.
