America Reads
The America Reads program at Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is a significant initiative dedicated to enhancing educational outcomes for children in under-resourced communities. This program partners with local schools and community centers to deploy paid college student-tutors who work directly with students from low-income areas, particularly in Title I schools. The program focuses on creating a supportive mentor relationship through small-group interactive activities aimed at improving skills in reading, writing, and math according to Arizona Academic Standards. In addition to providing tutoring, America Reads offers educational resources to families, reinforcing the support structure for students outside of school hours.
ASU students can participate as Community Engagement Ambassadors, a paid role that involves one-on-one tutoring and mentoring of children in grades K-8. These Ambassadors develop engaging, hands-on activities tailored to the academic needs of each student and assist with homework and subjects such as reading and mathematics. The program also collaborates with Step Up Tutoring, a non-profit organization, to offer virtual tutoring focused on fundamental math and literacy skills.
The impact of America Reads is evident in the marked improvement in academic engagement among the children served, fostering a sense of hope and aspiration within the community.
