ASA Mental Health Counselor
Hello Slauson Stars, my name is Mrs. Sanchez- Flores, I am your new School Counselor. While working in the office I went to Cal State LA and receiving a Master Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with an infuses in School Counseling. I also went to Mount St. Mary’s University to receive my Bachelor’s degree in sociology with infuses in family. I worked very hard to receive my degree and counseling credentials so that I can start working with you all and get to know you better. If you need anything you can always reach out to me and I would be more than happy to help.
Parent Workshops -Parent Workshops are typically facilitated by the counselor for 1 hour once a month. The purpose of parent workshops is to develop our families knowledge and skills to best support their child’s overall success. Parent Focus Groups- Typically facilitate by the counselor helps ASA better understand and support family needs. Honesty and feedback is encouraged to help us become a better school for your students and our community. Look for Parent Square Post and Flyers on Starlight Newsletter for our next Group!
Foster Care Placements-The counselor offers support to families who are currently supporting a student in foster care. The counselor typically completes a needs assessment to better understand how to support the family, and most importantly the student, during this time.
Homelessness- The counselor offers support to families who are currently struggling with homelessness. The counselor typically completes a needs assessment to better understand how to support the family, and most importantly the student, during this time.
Community Referrals- Counselor can provide community referrals that are tailored to your needs. Visit Counselors office hours our call.
Individual Counseling- Individual Counseling is for students in K-6 grade. Counseling typically last 45 minutes, once a week, for eight weeks. Students in counseling receive support with trauma, depression, anxiety, emotional regulation, self-esteem, growth mindset, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, social skills, and more. Students are considered through a referral process from staff and admin.
Skill Building Groups-Skill Building Groups are for students in K-6 grade. Each group consist of 3-4 students who are close in age with similar needs. The groups typically last 30 minutes, once a week, for eight weeks. The groups that have been offered in the past include: emotional regulation, stress management, self-esteem, social skills, growth mindset, conflict resolution, healthy relationships, and more. Students are considered through a referral process from staff.
Informal & Formal Check In’s- Informal & Formal Check In’s are given to K-6 students as needed throughout the year. Check in’s are typically 10-20 minutes. Informal check in’s are often given to students as a one time support during moments of crisis. Formal check in’s are often given to students who require more consistent support.
