ASP recommends that students spend their summers doing something they enjoy, not something that they think will look good for college. Expensive summer programs aren’t a golden ticket for admission and most are “pay-for-play.” We have compiled a list of selective summer programs that do provide significant financial support for low-income students.
We do not recommend taking out loans to pay for summer programs. If you have questions about a summer program that you’ve been invited to participate in, make sure to visit with your college advisor to ensure that it is a good use of time and money.
Working, attending summer camp, becoming a camp counselor, volunteering or even taking a MOOC course are all great ways to spend your summer, but whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s something you enjoy!
FACT: If you have to work, it will look just as good on your college application! Don't forget to list your jobs under your extracurricular activities! They count!
