North Park Village Nature Center
East pond, stone pond, and Walking Stick Woods
North Park Village Nature Center features a 58+ acre natural area. The natural area offers trails that wind through woodland, wetland, prairie, and savanna. Most of our survey points were along the edge of North Park's ponds which had an abundance of vegetation that allowed for dragonflies to perch and launch at prey. The size of the pond also allowed them to prosper without having to compete much for food.
Of all survey points, we saw the most activity at Stone pond, an artificial waterfall that pours into a pond surrounded by large rocks and various plants and trees. We believe that the constant moving water and few predators in this location is what allowed dragonflies to thrive.
North Park Village Nature Center also has a 12-acre area called Walking Stick Woods. It houses a variety of wildlife and it features winding mulch and soft-surface trails. We surveyed for dragonflies in a large field with tall grass and surrounded by trees like a prairie. which typically yielded only a few dragonflies at once could be due to the lack of water being present nearby.
Big Marsh has a rich history and is an exciting example of eco-recreation in urban areas, displaying the ongoing economic development in the southeast side of Chicago. We researched at several different locations throughout Big Marsh. As seen to the right, several of our surveys were taken on rocks next to a large pond surrounded by tall grass. We also surveyed in a large open plain with tall grass and little or no water nearby. We saw the most number of dragonflies in the former area, most likely do to the proximity of water.
Eugene field offers a variety of location for a person to visit. Our team primarily focused on the Chicago river passing Eugene field and the swamp located by. In the images displayed the river provided a perfect place for dragonflies to glide through: the lush and thick vegetation surrounding the river shelter insect that the dragonflies prayed on. The swamp has a similar environment with the main difference being the open space, allowing us to find what type of dragonfly we saw more efficiently.
