Q: Can a student compete/participate in two different sports at ASM?
A: We follow rules and regulations from the Deporte Infantil de la Comunidad de Madrid and Sports Federations.
Students are not allowed to play two competitive sports that participate in the same organization as we do in the Juegos Deportivos Municipales with our Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball Teams (except Alevín Co-ed Volleyball). A student will not be able to participate in two of these competitive sports.
Students who participate in one of the competitive sports will be able to also do a second sport of the following choices, as long as schedules do not interfere: Soccer Pre- Benjamín 2016 & 2017, Gymnastics Co-ed, Volleyball Alevín & Benjamín Co-ed, MS/US Cheer; MS Girls Soccer, US Girls Soccer, MS/US Golf, MS/US Flag Football and/or Fitness Center Activity.
Q: Can a student compete/participate in a sport outside of ASM and another one at ASM?
A: We follow rules and regulations from the Deporte Infantil de la Comunidad de Madrid and Sports Federations.
Students that are Federated in a sport, will not be able to participate in the same sport at ASM but could participate in a different sport at ASM.
For example: a student who plays soccer at Reebok Sport Club (which is Federated) will not be able to participate in soccer at ASM, but could participate in a different sport like volleyball or basketball) as long as schedules do not interfere, as it is a requirement that ASM students attend both practices and games in order to be able to be part of the team).
Q: What age category does my child belong to?
A: The Athletics Sports and Teams are organized by date of birth (DOB) and not by grade. Spanish competitions are run by categories and each category unifies two birth years. You can look at the different DOB for each category here.
Q: Why are students from the same grade level placed in different sports categories?
A: ASM has students born in different years within the same grade due to the entrance cut which is placed in August. Sports categories in Spain run by natural year of birth, where the cut is January 1st.
Q: When do sports practices begin?
A: Varsity and JV Teams (2005 - 2009), MS/US Cheerleading, and MS/US Golf begin practices on September 4. Pre-Season September JV/Varsity Schedules.
The rest of the sports categories (Infantil, Alevín, Benjamín, and Pre-Benjamín) begin practices in October.
Q: How are athletes selected for the different sports/teams?
A: Varsity and JV Teams (2005 - 2009) will have tryouts during the first weeks of practice during the pre-season. Pre-Season September JV/Varsity Schedules.
The rest of the sports categories (Infantil, Alevín, and Benjamín) will have specific dates in September where coaches will decide which team athletes will be placed in. This selection is based on feedback from previous years and observations made on the selection day session. Sport/Team Selection Day Schedules.
Q: Which team has my child been placed in?
A: Team placement for students who attended the Selection Days will be published on September 18 in PowerSchool.
Login PowerSchool: Select your child (if you have more than one child, make sure you select the corresponding tab): Afterschool Activities. You will see your child’s sports in order to be able to select other sports of ASA on September 18 when the online registration for other sports and ASA opens.
Q: Does it matter if I do the Online Registration later than other parents?
A: No. Sports are not based on a first come first serve basis. As long as you register during the time allotted your child will be placed in a team in the sport selected.
Q: Are sports at ASM seasonal like in the US?
A: In Spain, competitions run all year round. Sports at ASM run all year round as well (September/October - May). We do not follow the seasonal format followed in the US.
Q: What commitment is an athlete required to complete when participating in a sport at ASM?
A: An Athlete is expected to attend all practices (normally twice a week) plus the Saturday/Sunday game. If the Athlete is not able to fulfill this requirement, he/she will not be able to join a team.
Q: Where can I order the Soccer/Volleyball/Basketball/Flag Football/Track & Field Practice and Game Uniforms?
A: Orders for Training and Game Uniforms are made directly on our supplier's website..
Q: What is the Medical Examination?
A: All ASM Athletes need to get a specific sports medical examination done. This is required by the different sports organizations in Spain and it is a safety protocol we follow.
ASM facilitates this process by bringing a doctor on Campus during September. Students will be able to do it at ASM on the day their sport and category are scheduled. Please see the Medical Examination Schedule here.
If you prefer to get this medical examination done by your private doctor, please download this Medical Form and bring it back to the coach during the first practice of the season.
