Workshop on Thermodynamic Formalism
As we understand it, the main goal of statistical physics is to understand complex natural phenomena using simplistic models. In seminal work by Dobrushin, Lanford and Ruelle, it was realised that these models of statistical physics were in fact solutions to very natural variational problems. This was adapted by Rufus Bowen to the dynamics generated by a special class of diffeomorphisms called Anosov diffeomorphisms. Henceforth the subject has grown immensely and found applications ranging from complex dynamics, study of moduli spaces of representation varieties, computation of the dimension of certain fractals and number theory. Through this program we will try to understand the fundamentals of the subject following:
Equilibrium States and the Ergodic Theory of Anosov Diffeomorphisms by Rufus Bowen,
Zeta functions and the periodic orbit structure of hyperbolic dynamics by Parry and Pollicot.
