Shamanic Journey
Drumming Circle
A shamanic journey is a spiritual technique to enter an altered state of consciousness, typically through rhythmic drumming, to connect with spirit guides and receive information or healing. It involves journeying to hidden or "shamanic" realms to seek guidance for healing, creative inspiration, or answers to specific questions. The experience is personal, using visualization, senses beyond sight, and intuition to access information beyond ordinary reality.
How to undertake a shamanic journey
Set your intention: Clearly define the question you want to ask or what you hope to learn or heal from.
Find a quiet space: Choose a comfortable and dark place where you can relax undisturbed.
Prepare your mind: Take time to clear your mind and relax. Some find it helpful to call in guides or the four directions.
Use a drum or sound: Listen to rhythmic drumming, as the repetitive beat can help induce a trance state and synchronize brain waves.
Visualize an entry point (Portal): Imagine an opening in the earth or another entryway to the "lower world" to begin your journey.
Travel and observe: Once you've entered, let your journey unfold spontaneously. Observe any images, feelings, or sounds that come to you. Trust your experience and be open to receiving information.
Engage with your guide: A guide, such as a power animal or spirit guide, may appear. Be respectful, ask your question, and thank them for their guidance.
Return to ordinary reality: When the drumming indicates the end of the journey, thank your guides and take a moment to feel yourself back in your body before moving.
Process the experience: Take time afterwards to reflect on the journey. The full meaning of what you experienced may become clearer later through thoughts, dreams, or inspiration.
Key aspects of a shamanic journey
Altered consciousness: It uses rhythmic sound and visualization to shift consciousness, making it distinct from ordinary states of thought.
Spirit guides: During a journey, you can interact with spirit guides, ancestors, and other spirits who can provide information.
Personal experience: The experience is highly individual and is processed through all of one's senses, not just sight.
Healing and insight: Shamanic journeys can be used for personal and spiritual healing, to gain insights, and to retrieve lost parts of the self.
