Modern Literature and Language Arts

Office Hours: Mondays, 2:35 - 3:35 pm

Course Description

This course examines modern world literature and storytelling through a series of essential questions: (1) What experiences lead us from childhood into adulthood? (2) What does science fiction teach us about ourselves and our world? and (3) How does one realize their authentic self in spite of societal norms and the expectations of others? And (4) What is the true human cost of the clothes we buy? Over the course of these thematic units, students will learn and practice social emotional skills, reading comprehension strategies, and effective written and spoken communication by analyzing and responding to the diverse work of accomplished authors such as Jason Reynolds, Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood, and Zora Neale Hurston.

The quarterly capstone projects of the course require students to write a creative fiction narrative, create an informative website or video, write an argumentative letter, conduct investigative research, and write a critical analysis essay.
