As part of Early Childhood's year long project studying plants in our community, a small group of prekinder students explored some jacaranda seed pods. Once students realized the pods came from our jacaranda tree, the idea emerged to harvest more pods and plant as many seeds as possible.
All EC students began the process of planting 400 seeds. While planting, students examined jacaranda seed pods, noticed more seed pods in early childhood's jacaranda tree, and opened the pods.
Children prepared the soil for planting by mixing water into it.
Next we filled biodegradable pots and made sure not to pack the soil in tightly.
Students made holes in the soil for the seeds.
Children carefully planted two seeds in their pots.
“Las queremos plantar para que haya flores.”
After, students gently covered up the seed. :"Si no, se puede volar (la semilla)."
To water their seeds, children used their hands as filters .
The pots were kept in a central location on trays to help with watering and make them easy to move.
We waited and watered and at last our first jacaranda seed germinated. A few days later more started popping up. We also moved the pots to a new central location.
Children checked on the jacarandas as they came in to school, during recess, and at dismissal.
So excited to have more than 100 seedlings!
