Rules & Policies
Quarter Grade Calculation:
Your quarter grade will be calculated from the following categories with the indicated weights:
Semester Grade Calculation:
Your semester grade will be calculated from your two quarter grades according to:
Assessments:
There will be 4-5 tests per quarter, one for each topic.
No questions during tests and students may only use a pencil.
You are not allowed to exit the classroom under any circumstances.
You will not be allowed to share materials.
Make-ups: Only if the absence was justified under school policy during recess or after school. Day for the make-up will be explained during the first day of class.
Homework:
Assigned almost daily.
Grade will depend on how many skills were mastered within the deadline and/or how much time the students worked on working through the assignments as indicated by their new learning Platform: Carnegie Learning MathiA
Projects:
There will be one project per quarter, the details of which shall be announced towards the end of he quarter.
It usually requires an investment of 5-10 hours done off-campus. Usually, you have about 15 days to complete the assignment.
Classwork:
This is a semi-subjective grade based on a student’s participation and attitude. Punctuality, preparation, conduct and ability to follow instructions will also affect the grade.
The student is expected to be seated with their Carnegie Learning workbook, class materials, and computer at hand on their desk, prepared to start work when the second bell rings.
The teacher will keep track of participation, behaviour and classwork in class so that, at the teacher’s discretion, each time a student arrives at class unprepared (no workbook, no tools, no MathiA progress), he or she will receive a one-point deduction in this category from the quarter grade (out of ten). If a pattern develops, the student will be counselled. If no improvement is seen and the problem persists, the student will be referred to the assistant principal for Friday detention or other consequences he deems suitable
Important Reminders:
It is the student’s responsibility to save all returned graded material in case it is needed to settle a grade dispute later.
You will need at least 65% to be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities.
Late Work: No late work accepted (e.g. Projects). Basically: no second chances.
Final Exam Exemptions:
It is possible for a student in CP Geometry to exempt a semester final examination by demonstrating outstanding academic performance. Honors students are not able to exempt the final exam.
An average grade of at least “95.0” or greater over the preceding two quarters is required. In addition, if a student does not score at least “95.0” in each of the two preceding quarters, the student must show improvement in his or her quarter grades in order to exempt the final.
Scenario 1: If a student earns a “100.0” for the first quarter and a “90.0” for the second quarter, the student will not be exempt from the 1st semester final exam.
Scenario 2: If a student earns a “90.0” for the first quarter and a “100.0” for the second quarter, the student will be exempt for the 1st semester final exam.
Classroom Policies and Procedures:
These rules are designed to maximize learning efficiency. Please follow them.
Bring your Carnegie Learning Workbook, MacBook, calculator, ruler, protractor, and compass everyday to class. If a student does not do this, he or she is considered “unprepared” for class (see Participation/Preparation/Attitude above).
Tardies: Students are marked tardy if they are not in their seat and completing the agenda/activities or doing the do now when the second bell rings.
When the second bell rings, the door may be closed and locked at the teacher’s discretion. Once roll has been taken and the class is working, the tardy students will be let in.
If a student is tardy, he or she must write their name legibly on the extreme right portion of the whiteboard before sitting down so that your teacher can keep an accurate record in PowerSchool. If this isn’t done, the tardy will be converted to an absence.
Class time is not an appropriate place to discuss personal issues such as grades, individual makeup work, or upcoming travel plans. Please use recess and office hours after school to discuss these situations with your teacher.
No talking is allowed while a new topic or concept is being covered.
No cell phones, iPods, or other electronic devices will be allowed during class. They have to be turned-off or on silent mode AND out of sight, otherwise the teacher will take them and bring it to the office.
No eating in class. Gum-chewing is OK as long as it’s done discreetly.
If you finish the task at hand, then do your homework, help someone, prepare for the next day, or ask your teacher for a challenge problem. There is never time to “chill” or “chat with friends.”
Disciplinary problems are generally handed in the following manner:
Verbal warning, “take five” followed by a student-teacher conference, call to parent and/or office referral. Serious disciplinary situations involve the administration who as the options of employing probation, suspension, or expulsion.
Remember that your teacher excuses you from the classroom, not the bell.
Course Expectations:
Respect your teacher, classmates, school, and yourself.
Be responsible by being prepared, studying conscientiously and by doing your homework every night, punctually and completely
Be honest with yourself and everyone else. Specifically, never discuss or ask about the content of a quiz, test or semester final examination (globally referred to as evaluations) with a colleague until the evaluation has been returned to you. If you do, and it can be proven or logically inferred, you will be referred to the Assistant Principal for academic dishonesty and given a "zero" on the evaluation. The burden of proof is on you so avoid any behaviour that can seem suspicious and show all your work during assessment times.
Do your best at all times.
Learn and enjoy math.
