Highlights of Sustainable Practices
Filtered water dispensers and expects every member of our community to bring their own reusable water bottle
Utilizes reusable plates/cutlery/service items for all meetings/events (with up to 250 participants)
Eliminated all single-use cutlery and/or plates from our cafeterias including bottled water
Utilizes a grey water system for the watering of the fields and outdoor spaces
Reduces water use through the use of waterless urinals in men's bathrooms
Focused on using data to inform decisions for electricity, water and paper use
A number of sustainability-related Week Without Walls and Inspire trips
Recognition
In 2020 ASD was awarded with the Eco-Schools Green Flag award. The Eco-Schools program is coordinated by the Federation for Environmental Education and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. In winning the award ASD joins hundreds of like-minded school communities around the world in addressing sustainability!
ASD's Edible Education program was honored to receive the 2020 GESS Award for Environmental Ambassador as well as be shortlisted for the International Schools Awards for Environmental Initiative.
ASD is honored to have received the 2019 Zayed Sustainability Prize—Global High Schools (the Middle East and North Africa) Category. ASD plans to install an industrial composter for organic waste (cafeteria and landscaping), install a beehive to teach about biodiversity and beekeeping, and install a data dashboard on campus to display real-time information about our energy use, water use, and waste. ASD’s Roots & Shoots program was recognized for efforts in conservation in January 2019. The award recognizes the ASD program’s efforts in conservation—such as supporting the water stations throughout the campus, spreading awareness during school assemblies about the power of conservation, and partnering with Give a Ghaf program. They received the award by Dr. Jane Goodall herself.
ASD has a robust recycling program through it's environmental partnership with Emirates Environmental Group through which we have won several awards in the past few years for paper and plastic recycling
