These classes are specifically geared towards incoming 5th graders. Note that 5th graders are welcome in the FLL camp, which is in the "Middle School" section below.

Description: Students will brush up on essential English Language Arts skills, setting them up for a successful academic year at ASD. The class will be tailored to address critical areas of reading and writing including vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, types of writing, summarizing, grammar and mechanics.

Description: Students will enrich their literacy skills by focusing on a different literary genre each day. Literary genres may include poetry, folklore, realistic fiction, and biography. Students will study mentor texts of each genre, complete related activities, and compose their own pieces.

Description: Ease in to 5th Grade at ASD. This course will help prepare students for the 5th grade math program at ASD. Content directly leads into the school year curriculum. This course is ideal for both students looking for a challenge and students who are nervous about what to expect. On the last day of the workshop, a mini-project will be completed based on the topics covered during the workshop. The goal of this program is to make learning interesting through real life example based knowledge acquisition and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.

6th Grade Camps
These classes are specifically geared towards incoming 6th graders. Note that these classes typically fill up very quickly as they're a great way to get to know the teachers and other students. Sign up early!

Description: Students can learn how to best organize themselves in order to be successful! They will participate in organizational activities, and also learn some tips and tricks about staying organized. This will also give them a head start on knowing what materials are required for their classes next year. This class includes techniques for both physical organization and electronic organization, a key for success! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Description: Get to know ASD! You'll learn about what school is like at ASD, and you'll get to know your fellow 6th graders. Mr. O'Connell will also review concepts key to your success this upcoming year! This class is a tremendous help for new students. It runs for two weeks, so when school starts in the fall, you'll hit the ground running with new friends! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. Description: Students will learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling software using Tinkercad, and use it to design different projects, such as a keychain, an avatar, spinning tops and more! Students will choose one project to print out and keep. Students will need to bring a device from home.

Description: Get ready for a fun-filled adventure in the world of engineering at our Snap Circuits & Robotics Summer Camp! This exciting camp is designed for curious 6th & 7th graders eager to explore the world of circuits, gadgets, and robots in a hands-on, creative environment. Students will dive into the basics of electrical engineering using Snap Circuits, a cool, easy-to-use system that lets you build real working circuits. From creating your own light-up designs to understanding how electricity flows, you'll gain valuable knowledge about how the world of electronics works! But that's not all – you’ll also step into the world of robotics. Using fun, beginner-friendly robotics kits, students will learn and play with Edison Robots (https://meetedison.com) and XRP Robots (https://experientialrobotics.org). They will design builds for the robots, code (using EdScratch and Blockly) the robots and compete in challenges.

Description: Incoming 6th grade students will need a variety of skills to succeed in their social studies classes. This class gives students an opportunity to learn (or review) key geography skills, including creating and reading maps, understanding different types of maps, use of digital mapping software, and more! This will also give students a head start on knowing expectations and content for sixth grade social studies.

Description: It's a great time to be a gamer! In this 2 week introductory course we will focus on card games. Students will practice making their own cards for existing games, as well as go on to create a brand new game with their classmates!

Description: This course is for students who have already had some exposure to poetry and would like to explore this topic through reading a variety of poems by a variety of poets and work on writing their own poems.

Description: This course is designed to help prepare students for the Computer Science Placement Exam. This course is excellent both for students looking to brush up on the basics and those who are looking for practice writing and debugging code. This course is also ideal for students who are interested in coding for robotics and potentially joining the robotics team. This course will work its way through the ASD Python study guide. Seating is limited, so don't delay!

Description: This enriching summer course is specifically designed for students to develop essential scientific skills necessary for transitioning into high school science courses in the Fall, with a particular emphasis on Biology. Description: This course is intended for students who have not yet had Algebra I. Some Algebra I basics will be covered this week to prepare the students to begin Algebra I at ASD, and also some deeper Algebra concepts like factoring polynomials will be introduced to give students some advance practice. Although the course is intended for incoming students, previous students may also enjoy this camp for a review of Algebra I concepts, as they prepare to move on to their next math class. This course is also recommended for student who need to review competencies before advancing.

Description: An exploration of digital photography. Students will learn the functions of digital cameras, including the use of basic exposure settings - aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Students will focus on basic photography techniques and guidelines for composing compelling photographs, and the majority of time in this class will be spent in hands-on practice sessions. This course will equip students with the techniques and principles to capture stunning images. This course requires students to bring a device capable of taking photos, such as a digital camera or a smartphone/tablet with a built-in camera.

Description: This course explores the rich and intersecting histories of Black Americans and women, examining their struggles, achievements, and contributions to society. Through historical documents, literature, and cultural analysis, students will investigate key figures, movements, and events that have shaped both Black history and women's history in the U.S. and beyond. Emphasizing themes of resistance, activism, and progress, this course encourages critical thinking about the past and its lasting impact on the present.

Description: This is a week long course covering the basics of how to use spreadsheets to simplify analysis and workflows in an academic settings. Ranging from basic data organization to analysis via graphing, histograms, pivot tables, and formulas; this course aims to give students the tools to make powerful observations and produce robust results by introducing them to these simple to use tools available to them via Google Sheets and Excel. The hope is that this will help address observed deficiencies in using sheets we are seeing in analysis skills from grades 9 to 12.

Description: This summer course will allow students to get their health graduation requirement completed in just 3 weeks as opposed to taking the semester long course during the school year. It is a great option for students expecting a full course load next year! This will be graded as a course that will go on the student's transcripts. This course runs for three weeks. Rising seniors receive priority in this course.
