In celebration of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day (2/16), Indian Education students learned about perseverance and courage in the face of discrimination. Students participated in a Readers Theater, re-enacting the courtroom scene where Elizabeth helped change laws to benefit of all Alaska Natives. Some of our 2nd grade students helped Mrs. Kate create a banner in the hallway that celebrates a piece of artwork painted by Aleknagik artist, Apayo Moore. Moore's painting of Elizabeth Peratrovich recently graced the cover of the biography, Fighter in Velvet Gloves, by Annie Boochever with Roy Peratrovich Jr.. The painting and book inspired the students to come up with ways that they too could help make Alaska a better place to live. Some of the ideas students came up with were to be a good friend, to help new students when they start at the school, to be role models to students in younger grades, to be brave, and always, to be kind.
October 12, 2020 is Indigenous People's Day, followed by the whole month of November, which is when we celebrate Native Heritage Month.
Part of the way we can celebrate Native Heritage Month is to participate in National Rock your Mocs Week. People around the country wear their moccasins or other traditional footwear, and we are invited to celebrate by wearing our Mukluks!
Want to know more? Check out different styles, colors and patterns of Mocs represented on the Rock Your Mocs National Facebook Page
A great big thank you to Mr. Wassilie, who painted the portrait of William Tyson when the school was founded, and stopped by this winter to vistit and help us pick out a brand new frame.
