Social Studies (Dyer) - Students are beginning to create Padlet Maps for current events and using Padlet to share Good Things to start class. In 7th Grade Geography we are using the 5 Themes of Geography to describe locations. In 8th Grade U.S. History, we are studying the formation of European colonies in the Americas and the changes that occurred due to colonization.
Language Arts (Thompson) - The theme of Unit One in the SpringBoard curriculum is the Challenge of Heroism. In the first quarter, the students learned about the archetypes of the Hero’s Journey using many different examples including books, film, and folklore. In the second quarter, the students will be writing their own hero story.
Language Arts (Franklin): Quarter two has started off strong by diving into myths and folklore. Students are analyzing how a character’s motivation and behavior influences the events of a story. We will compare and contrast character traits across multiple myths. After myths and folklore, we will move into informational texts. We will synthesize various informational texts with a variety of points of view in order to write an argumentative piece of writing.
Math (King): This month in math we will begin unit 2 in our iReady workbooks, which discusses adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. I am excited to see students conceptually understand negative numbers! Students are typically very successful and enjoy this unit.
Science (Roseberry): We have just finished our study of exploration and classification of life. We are now studying bacteria and viruses. Once we are done we will move into the study of plant and animal cells. Frog dissections will take place around Thanksgiving. In addition, we will begin coding on Code.org for the last part of the second quarter.
Social Studies (Stewart): Students have been applying the five themes of Geography to Alaska. We will finish the Alaska unit the first week of November then move on to the United States. Students will learn about the major landmarks, various regions, as well as all 50 of the states. We will complete mini quizzes each week in order to learn more about the states and their locations. We will also use numerous online tools to help the students learn more about the country. This will take approximately two weeks before we move onto Canada. We will learn about the Canadian provinces and landmarks before Thanksgiving break. I will also be implementing the CNN22 program which introduces students to current events.
Language Arts (Bondarenko): In November we’ll focus on our strengths and how to use our talents. We’ll read a short story The Challenge, a folk tale Rachel the Clever, and a play A Contest of Riddles, and learn what motivates people to behave in certain ways and how that affects the outcome of events. In different genres we will analyze characters, plots, settings and themes. To improve reading and writing skills we’ll focus on synonyms, pronouns as subjects, forms of the verb to be, and complete simple sentences. Students can access all curriculum materials at this link: https://ngconnect.asdk12.org. We’ll continue working on our e-portfolio using https://www.storyjumper.com/user/login and publishing more writing.
Math (Mr. Priest):
Hello Math 7 and Pre-Algebra! As we transition to the second quarter, students in all math classes should be seeing more new material as the first quarter has a lot of review. As a reminder, all students have two attempts on every canvas assignment, if they want more, they need to contact me through Canvas inbox. Please ensure your student is also bringing their required materials to school. A pencil and a charged Chromebook are essential for success in math. On that note, if any parents want to donate pencils it would be greatly appreciated. I have given out about 300 this year and am running low. Have a great month!
Social Studies (Mr. Petrash):
November will bring my students to explore Alaska’s geography. We will create some cool Alaskan Maps - even a big one that students can bring home and put on their wall in their room! Students will need to know their 50 states - what they look like and where they are located. U.S. Geography will be the focus for all of November. REMEMBER: The 2nd Quarter brings higher expectations, as well as an additional night of homework (HW) per week (2x a week). Be sure to have your Hour of Power - a time set aside when you are home to focus on HW and completing long-term assignments, like learning your 50 states!
Science (Mrs. Heath):
During the month of November in science, students will be constructing Animal and Plant cell models and completing Unit 3 tasks including the Unit Test on Nov 10. The month will conclude with the beginning of our Unit on Coding.
Language Arts (Mrs. Lake):
Hello! November already! Please know for Mt. Olympus ELA, through SpringBoard, we will be analyzing the elements of myth and folklore, recognizing what influences our choices, and differentiating between reliable and unreliable sources. For supplemental activities, we will be working on grammar and reading/discussing various types of poetry and prose. Please feel free to email me at lake_noel@asdk12.org with any questions. Thank you!
Team Wolverine Peak students should plan to bring the following items to all core classes:
3-ring binder with tabs for each class
Lined paper
Pencil
Charged Chromebook
Planner (once issued)
In Mrs. Whitesell’s Social Studies class, we are studying how prosperity, literacy, and new movements in religion and thought shaped the American colonies. These forces began to create an American identity and we will learn what happened as the colonists began to wonder whether the British government protected their rights and freedoms.
In Mr. Gumlickpuk’s Math 8 class, students will begin to learn about slope, rate of change, and proportional relationships. In addition, we will learn how to graph a line on our coordinate plane and how to interpret what the line means. Lastly, we will learn real world problems involving what the “y-intercept” and “slope” means in a real world example.
In Algebra, students will also be exploring the many different ways to graph a line based on different approaches. This can be done using the x-intercept and y-intercept, slope-intercept form, standard form, and graphing a line from a table.
After this unit, we will work with data collection and how to represent data using scatterplot, measures of central tendency, stem and leaf plots, histogram, frequency table, box and whisker plot, and the difference between causation and correlation. After using this, we will do a group project to showcase how we collect data and display it.
In School Business Partnership, students will learn more about our school business partners within the Hanshew community. In addition, they will learn more about careers and post secondary education and trade school.
In Mrs. Giraldo’s ELA class, students will wrap up the Hero’s Journey with a short but complete original story they began in Quarter 1. Before they submit their final piece, we’ll review sentence structure and have a peer review of their drafts. We’ll read poems and essays about real-life heroes from conflicts in Romania and Afghanistan, and about American heroes Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Mr. Mittelstadt’s Science is going strong in our unit in chemistry. Labs to look forward to are the exothermic and endothermic lab complete with your own hot and cold pack you make from scratch. The Periodic Table of Elements will also be a main focus before November is out. Look for research on a favorite element on the periodic table!
In Mr. Oliver’s Science class, we are learning about the periodic table and the chemical reactions that come from it. In Animals of the World, we are exploring Antarctic ecology.
In Mrs. Chico’s ELL Newcomers Academy, we are in the 5 Themes of Geography in Social Studies and will create google slides as travel agents of their home country. In Language Arts, we are working hard on learning the English language using the SIPPS and INSIDE C curriculum. In Math, we got started with the Language of Algebra workbook honing on our pre-algebra skills through visual illustrations. In Science, we are doing mini- experiments in our Ecosystem unit. Students are learning about biodiversity.
In 7th period ELL Strategies of Success, we will be reading selections about notable people and will practice writing a summary using the IVF strategy. Daily work and participation log is due every Friday.

November 1st is a special day in the Hispanic culture to honor people who are dead with ofrendas. For example, in Mexico Día de los Muertos is celebrated to honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism, imposed on the region by Spanish conquerors. (Día de los Muertos is celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, minor holidays in the Catholic calendar.) Día de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. On Día de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones.
“To all the loved ones who are no longer with us today, we want you to know that we will love you and forever carry you in the most precious chamber of our hearts until we too are covered by earth.”
