Autumn is upon us with colder temperatures and less daylight. Be sure to take time to do self care, and consider taking some Vitamin D!
We are still up on our COVID cases and hospitalizations. I cannot stress enough to vaccinate, as you may still get COVID, but your symptoms will be less severe and hospitalization much less likely. Booster shots (Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J) are available for 65 yrs and older, people that experience a serious high risk medical condition, people that live in a residential health care facility, teachers and health care workers. A booster shot needs to be spaced at least 6 months since the last dose.
Close contacts are allowed to come back to school, masked of course. CDC and the State of Alaska recommend a quarantine and testing for COVID on Day 6 of symptoms or the positive test from the close contact. If you are vaccinated, it is recommended you get a test on day 3-5 since exposure and still maintain masking for 14 days. If symptomatic, get tested right away. This is why I ask parents/guardians to test their children when I send them home ill.
I was able to vaccinate over 100 people at our Hanshew Flu Clinic. If you missed the clinic and wish to be vaccinated, please feel free to give me a call for more information.
Hanshew is offering COVID tests. A QR code will be sent to register and after answering questions, you will receive a personal QR code that will be used. This is for symptomatic students and staff only. I will have more information in the next week. In the meantime, ASD uses Abbott Loop Elementary for testing. Results are usually within 24-36 hrs.
The CDC has given emergency authorization for vaccines to be administered to children 5 years and older. These will be available in early November, a good time to keep your children safe and back to participating in things that they like to do, safely!
In closing have a beautiful fall! Take up walking on the trails in our parks! The trail behind Hanshew is a beautiful walk!
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to call!

Hanshew Girls Basketball Wrap-Up, by Coach Stoops
The Hanshew girls basketball team completed their 2021 season on October 9 with an 18-14 win over Begich and 23-15 victory against Clark. The wins improved the Hawks season record 5-3. Hanshew was not scheduled a junior varsity team, and all 19 players competed for the varsity team.
“We had a great season,” said first year Head Coach Jake Stoops. “It would have been really nice for the girls to be split up into two teams to offer more playing time, but all in all, we had a very successful year.”
In addition to the team success, several individuals stood out. Eighth-grader Lelei Mose led the team in scoring and assists, a feat that demonstrates not only her talent, but also unselfishness and willingness to be a team player. “I can’t say enough about Lelei,” said Stoops. Great player, great teammate on the floor and led by example with her work ethic in practice. She left a lot of good shot opportunities on the table in order to get her teammates involved.” Stoops said he expects Lelei to become First Team All Conference in Cook Inlet high school play in the near future.
Maliyah Schmid also had a breakout season. This year marked the first official games she had ever played, but you’d never know it by her production. “Maliyah was terrific,” said Stoops. “But she’s only scratching the surface of the player she can become. She’s so strong and athletic, if she decides to dedicate herself to basketball and put in the time, get the repetitions… she and Lelei will form an amazing duo for Service High School.”
Two other top eighth graders included Veronica Tuzroyluk and Kaia Erickson. Stoops noted that while neither has played “comp” basketball, both have basketball in their blood with roots in rural Alaska basketball hotbeds Point Hope and Unalakleet, respectively.
Hanshew’s future looks bright as well with standout performances from 7th graders Madison Boyd, Rhianna Kochutin and Gia Rami-Ulak.
“Madison was terrific in the open court,” said Stoops. “Whether it was jumping passing lanes, or disrupting the dribble on defense or getting out in transition on the fast break, her athleticism really showed out. Rhianna is one of our few girls that has played comp ball and her ball handling and passing were beyond her years. Gia is a scorer. She’s got a scorer’s mentality and an innate knack for knocking down shots.”
Overall, Stoops noted one game in particular this season that stood out to him.
“Even though we lost it, our second game against Mears was pretty special. They beat us the first time 43-8 and our younger girls were overwhelmed with their trapping zone. The second time we played them, we fell behind again 24-4 at halftime.”
With the minimum play rule, where every player must play 4:00 minutes in the first half, Hanshew had a new five girls on the floor every 4 minutes all season.
“In the second half of the Mears game, I decided to let the top 7-8 girls go to see what they could do. We outscored Mears 16-6 for the half and cut the lead to six at one point, before we finally lost 30-20. It was an impressive display of toughness and resiliency, and also a glimpse of what our varsity was capable of.”
The rest of the Hanshew roster included: Zoey Escolta, Mylee Flatt, Cynbeline Mann, Victoria Marrero, Elsie Mujagic, Ashlee Olds, Casey Struna-Meyer, Greta Warshawsky, Serenity Brown, Eva Dahle, Attia Braham and Brooke Wilson.
