Hawk Highlights

Message from your Principal:

Dear Hanshew Families,

With snow on the ground, it is definitely a sign of winter time. Please remind your students to wear coats, warm clothing, and proper shoes. Open toe shoes such as crocs, flip flops, birkenstocks, and the like will not be allowed due to safety reasons.

Thank you for attending our parent-teacher conferences in October. Our students worked especially hard during 1st quarter to maintain their grades and increase their learning. 381 students earned honor roll this quarter and were celebrated on Friday, October 29th with certificates, bumper stickers, and icecream treats. We are so proud of our Hanshew Hawks!

November is Alaska Native and Native American heritage month. We will be celebrating the accomplishments of Indigenous people and encouraging our students to learn more about the AK Native tribes.

Just another reminder, masks are required for everybody in the school. Please send your student with masks to wear each day.

Please check our website for upcoming events and activities. if you have questions or concerns, please contact the front office at 742-9930.

As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lakhita Hodge

Hanshew Middle School Principal

AP Updates

November is here and we are so thankful we are in person and that students are engaged and participating in a variety of activities. Here are some reminders to review.

Be on Time! Students who are tardy to class will receive lunch detention. It is their responsibility to go to detention Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. If a student does not go or has too many detentions, student will be assigned to sit at the reset table and then clean up after lunch. If student still does not come, parents will be notified and progressive discipline will be determined. When students are late they miss vital class information. It is important to have all supplies BEFORE class including charged chromebooks, binder, and any necessary supplies.

Attendance: Attendance is important and really impacts a student’s learning. If your child is absent, please call school to excuse them and remind them to get their missing work competed and turned in.

Dress Code Reminder: It is getting colder, students need to bring a coat and dress appropriate for the weather. They are to leave coat in their locker during class time. No hats, beanies, and/or hoods are to be worn inside school. Please see the Hanshew Student Handbook for more details on our school dress code. All backpacks and purses need to go in locker.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up: Thank you to all the parents using the parent drop off South Entrance. Do not park or enter through North entrance, as this is reserved for busses and staff. This helps keep the traffic flow moving when we all use the correct entrances. Please do not turn left when leaving Hanshew from 7:45-8:15am and again 2:30-3:00pm as this clogs up the traffic and it is hard for busses to get in and out safely.

Safety: Last month we completed more drills which included our annual Great Alaska Shakeout completed on Oct. 21st. They did great!! Every month we will practice an evacuation drill, so please make sure students wear proper shoes and dress appropriate for our colder season.

Discipline: Most students overall are doing well. Some students are on their phones from 8:00-2:45pm , they will be asked to take their phone to the office and parents will need to pick it up. Please remind them to keep phone at home or put it away during school.

Sports

Wrestling has begun and they are all weighed in and ready for their first match on Tuesday Nov. 2nd at Goldenview Middle School at 5pm. We have amazing coaches and volunteers that are helping this awesome group of boys and girls be the best they can be.

Volleyball has also started with a HUGE turnout! With over 80 volleyball players, it has been nice seeing them practice and make new friends. We are excited to see them play and for some learn the basics of volleyball.

Come watch Hawk sports but remember students must be accompanied by an adult who will supervise them. Students cannot just be dropped off. Show your school spirit and dress in Red and Black.

Sincerely,

Maria Humecky, AP
